Afterseeing this whilst on vacation in China:
http://www.youtube.com/watch.php?v=7tkJB_xr-uA Have been researching blockheading and can't wait to start shoving thing into my face. Hope you are all equally inspired by the video. The guy also swallowed a sword then a steal ball bearing the size of a golf ball, he kept it down, while he walked around collecting money before spitting it back up and out into the crowd, lush! |

Its a very dangerous act, esp if you do not have the correct instructions or guidance.
One mistake while attempt to learn it the wrong way could be your last. Please take all due care if you are really interested in starting to shove things into your face.

Come on down to the Believe it or not section.
The blockhead is one of the stunts that got a lot of us into the sideshow (well espically thanks to that old X files episode with Jim Rose and The Enigma). Good stunt, but yeah you can get seriously injured if it does go wrong. |

Yeah, some long threads on this here. I haven't done it in a long while. Ensure you disinfect the nail real well prior to insertion. First time I saw this was when I was a young lad at the state fair. Microphone (for the pounding) enhances this effect.

So does doing it with a cordless drill. Bad thing is I gotta find a drill that will produce a good high pitched whine these days.

Todd Robbins, who was a featured guest here in 2005, is the recognized expert on these carny acts. Most of them vary from "dangerous" to "insanely dangerous." It is absolutely necessary to have instruction from an expert, like Todd. He has taught classes for a very select number of students, I believe, in the past.
He can be contacted through the Magic Café.

My girlfriend has been doing the blockhead for years. She works as The pin cushion girl in our circus show here in Toronto. one thing that is adviced is not to do it in a crowd. Often a spectator will grab at the nail thinking its gaffed and that gets dangerous. They never tell you this in the videos

Eric,
You're better off learning it in person, from someone who knows it well.

I was pretty dawg gone scared the first time. I started with a toothpick. Sneezed a lot. My problem is nailing it into my face. Its just so sensitive up there in my nasal canal. I got a little blood also the first few times.
I still get good reactions no matter how slow I push it up there. To me, that's what counts in the long run. I'm sure most can just hammer that bad boy right up there quickly but I wouldn't advise someone just starting out in sideshow looking freak show stuff to do this. JMO Candini

Block head can be dangerous, best to have a tutor, I was extremely lucky. I started as a fireater with the james strates shows in the fifties,(i was 14 at the time) a gentleman named melvin burkhardt, told me I need to do more working acts, got me into pincushion and blockhead, was patient and very helpful( I and pretty much no body else could use a nail big as the one melvin used, I think it was a 30 penny

What's the length of the nail most people use? When I was messing around with this a few years back I never got past a about a 4 inch nail, but whenever I see it performed everybody seemed to have one long mammerjammer.

I used a q tip to learn. Wet the tip it will help with the fibers.... PLus the fibers help you restrain yoursefl from sneezing. Once I put a nail in it was so easy because it was not rough like the q tip.

In spirits of keepin this post alive I actually have been performing the human blockhead act for about 2 weeks now. I actually file down my nails. The nails I use generally range from about 3-5 inches but like said early in the thread it isn't one size fits all. By the way did I mench that I am 16.
