Aiki,
The trick was first published in Lewis Ganson's The Dai Vernon Book of Magic (1957), where it is explained that Daley perfected the trick in the last few weeks of his life, before passing away at the end of a performance in 1954. --Andi

Hello Aiki: It is also available on Michael's Ammar's Easy To Master Card Series. Not sure which volume right now, and my video's are still packed from a move. But if you just check the contents of his series, the tricks are listed.
Michael does Twisting The Aces and Doc's Last Card Trick on the same video. They flow really well together. NOT to put down 'Doubleback' or 'Drop Dead Queens" (they are both awesome effects), but I'd take T.T.A. and Doc's L.C.T. anyday over them. If you don't mind gaffs, then definitely order one or both of the above. Anyway Aiki, do check out Michael's series. BEST.....smitty |

Smitty,
Dr Daley's trick is a classic. We all agree, but I do think Double Back just brings it even further. I understand some purists do not like gaffs, which is fine. But I feel we are magicians who do impossible things sometimes with gaffed props. |

Hi Smitty,
I saw your post and thank you for contributing. Don't feel bad about your point of view as everyone has the right to be wrong ;-) Seriously, you said that DDLT doesn't need any improvement. After showing a card you place it face down which you then do a second time. Unseen cards in your hand change to the face down cards on the table/hand. There will be a large number of people that quickly come to the assumption you somehow put the other cards down in the first place. They don't know how but it's the only explanation. Double Back adds a layer of convincing by showing the cards not on the table/hand to be in your hands. Everything is copacetic. Personally, if you can show the cards in your hand, this is an improvement. Note it is not just the physical side of DB that sells it but the routining. Performing magic without any gaffs is a whole different and fascinating subject! I'm reminded of when Bob Dylan chose to use an electric guitar and was accused of 'selling out'.

Double Back is one the most diabolical effects you can do. And...I have never had anyone grab for the cards.

Double Back is one of my favourite effects to perform and I think it's an inspired piece of magic, but I don't use the suggested presentation. I always feel oddly guilty about this, as although I do this will all marketed effects I buy I know Jon structured the presentation to make the effect more convincing, and I worry that somehow I'll fail to do it justice. Are there certain elements that should be included whatever patter is used? How do people think this effect should be performed to maximise the impact?
Also - what does copacetic mean? |

I know of a coupl eof instances where people have created their own patter presnetations and, personally, I think they have ruined the effect. If there were a couple of elements I think should always be included, it's:
Not making a big deal about putting the two cards face down on someone's hand or the table. if you put emphasis on them, people are more inclined to want to check they are the cards you ay they are. Make sure people absolutely know which cards you have in your hands. Don't give a quick flash just to get to the effect. Let it register that you have two cards and they are both Kings I'm interested to see what other presentations people have for it. As for copacetic, it means acceptable to satisfactory.

I don't put the cards face to face and I do the move while misdirecting them. I've never been caught and in hundreds of performances, I've never had one time where I didn't get gasps. Jon, thanks for releasing this fantastic effect to the fratnerinity. It KILLS!!!!!

Thanks for your post Jon, I appreciate your thoughts on the matter. I think my presentation focuses attention in the right ways, so hopefully you wouldn't be too horrified if you ever saw me do it. I'm going to keep working on it though. I like that the simplicity of the effect allows for such a dramatic moment, and I want to make sure I do it justice.
Thanks also for expanding my vocabulary! |

For me, the strength of Double Back is the simplicity of it all. I've heard of people who have routines where they talk about aliens inhabiting human bodies; criminals who fake IDs and other such things. Maybe they work on some level but I wonder why there is the need to dress up something in a fanciful story when the simplicity of it all is what makes it so strong.
Each to their own I guess!
