A friend of mine really wants to team up and start working together. I am unsure if it is something I want to do.
I am just curious in a mentalism show if any of you use a partner? Or in the past have used a partner? If you could let me know of your experience I would appreciate it. |

I really love this idea.
So much that if there was a mentalist near me who wanted to have a meeting with view to investigating the possibility of forming a top class mentalist act then I'd be very interested. My main fear (I know this'll sound pompous but I'm only being honest here) is that they might not be in my league. I'm sure I could have worded this far better but this way saves a lot of time. You don't sound pompous you just have self pride. Nothing wrong with that. I have never done effects involving two people. So I guess I am just trying to figure out how it would work effectivly with two people.

I don't have a partner, and only had one once, My Wife. But she just isn't a stage person. She didn't like it, and it showed.
A partner can add or detract from your performance depending on chemistry and how the two complement one another. Most successful teams that I have seen have a dramatic difference of character between the two partners that allows a natural interaction and byplay that can be quite entertaining. On the other hand, it would seem to me that two people who look alike and sound alike and act alike would really need a strong hook to be entertaining and not have one of them be redundant. Husbands and wives (or just a man and woman) provide well for that byplay. And since I am assuming that friend is the same sex as you are, that doesn't apply anyway, so lets skip it. And then for other teams, look at more than just mentalism. Look at Penn and Teller. Even Siegfried and Roy offer Two strong and different persona's. And then go to comedian and look at the many successful pairs there, Martin and Lewis, Desi and Lucy, Abbott and Costello... In all of those cases, it was the strong difference and almost magical balance between the two that allowed the real entertainment to happen. Not that I am trying to tell you that you have to be funny. You could probably get by on the other side too. If the balance is right. If you feel like you want to do it, give it a shot. If you don't want to do it, tell him that need to take the dog to the vet whenever he wants to practice. By the time he figures out that you don't have a dog, he will probably also figure out that if you don't want to do something, any excuse will work. One the other hand. In spite of everything I have said, if you and your friend find a way that works for it, even if it doesn't fit a formula, that doesn't mean it can't work.

There are lots of 2 people mental acts in the annals of magical history, and there are many routines for two people, corinda and anneman spring to mind.
My daughter (who is 6) and I have a code for esp cards but we only perform for family, friends and scientists. our method is based upon the sound one from corinda ; ) We're working up to playing cards. The Zancigs spring to mind. Corinda suggests it is twice the work but worth it if you can get together intently on the matter, A husband and wife, for instance seems, a natural choice. An invisible assistant could be even better though.

I have thought of the invisible assistant. I think we both like being on stage to much to do it. I like the idea though.
I wonder why Corinda would suggest it is twice the work? To me it seems like you could market yourself better, because you have two people doing it. |

That is true. I am sure it takes time just to pick up on subtle talk/actions/etc.

I have a performing partner and we have done a highly profitable two person combination telepathy and psychometry act for over 12 years. It is our sole income.
Our fees are more than double as there are two performers and people expect to pay more for multiple performers. We each perform our own act and then do a combined Two Person Telepathy Routine. Our experience has proven that the total act is much more powerful than its individual parts. Treat it as one would a theatrical performance - script, rehearsal, structured performance and it comes together very profitably. We know - we are doing it. STAY MYSTICAL |

So you are each on stage alone for how long? How long is your Two Person Telepathy Routine?

Hi chichi711,
have you ever checked out the Falkenstein & Willard videos? Also, keep an eye out for Simon Aronson's upcoming L & L release - it demonstartes a two person act with Simon & his wife - KILLER!!!! Kaylan |

Thanks Kaylan. Do you know when the Aronson DVD's are going to release?
I will look up Falkenstein and WIllard. |

The Simon Aronson material was shot the same day as the Joshua Jay material - they are good friends. The release date is up to L & L - I have no idea. It could be in a couple months, or it might be in a couple years. The mind reading act Mr. & Mrs. Aronson did might be performance only, but hopefully they'll explain it because it was eerie how good they were at it.
Kaylan PS - you can get the Falkenstein & Willard videos from L & L Publishing - I highly recommend getting these videos because they will help you make up your mind about whether it will be something you'll want to do (team up with someone). |

The Falkenstein DVD from L&L mentioned above would be an excellent choice so you can see what is involved in a Two Person Act. STAY MYSTICAL |

You get to see the two person act (actually several different phases of it) on the Falkenstein and WIllard videos, and I highly recommend them.
They give a nice explanation and fully tip Glen's Blindfold act, and other material like teh Gypsey Rope tie, but they just give some good solid ideas about the second sight act. It isn't really laid out so that it could be performed. but is given as a starting point to consider if you want to make the investment such an act requires. But a partner act doesn't need to include second sight, although if I had a partner, that would be the first thing we worked on, as it can be quite amazing to the audience.

ChiChi, Just do it, what have you got to lose? It could be great or it could suck but you won't know until you try it. I can see that you are fairly knowledgeable and if your friend is at the same level it should be no problem for you to work out a couple of simple routines and see if it's worth pursuing.

The most important thing regarding two person acts is stage craft. I briefly worked with a set of twins for an MTV show a few years ago. They called them selves the saint twins and to this day their presentation was the worst I have ever seen. They talked over each other, couldn’t work the stage or the audience and just basically tripped all over each other. It was so distracting that the audience couldn’t really follow what was going on.
The owner of the club let them open the show with a 10 minute piece simply because MTV was going to show the club. MTV had to edit their act so heavily because their act was so horrid. It wasn’t that the effect where bad. They where a few strong commercial effect. However, they had no clue as to how to work the stage or the audience as a team. It was painful to watch. They didn't listen to anything I tried to help them with. They had a shot on MTV and blew it. No one has heard of them since. Having said that, Brian Gillis and Sisuephan performed in the same club with me and had the audience in the palm of their hand. They had their stage craft down and their material was strong. They are a great team and know how to entertain. If you are going to do a two person act, I think one of the most difficult aspects would be the blocking, scripting, pacing, and spectator management. - Brandon Cross |
