Hey,
I was performing the other day and I had a guy that owns a DJ company and he asked me to work with him. Going places that he goes and does show for and doing magic. Okay, my first question is... Has anyone ever done this or something like this before, if so how did it go. Also, we are going to write out a contract, what should the contract include. Thanks in advance. Shane |

A lot of us here actually DJ and perform magic.
When being booked by someone, always get a contract. |

Yes but what should I include in the contract?

Forget the contract to much stuffing about- do some work for him and see how it feels before you sign anything.
just get paid in advance if your just starting out- watch out for scam artists who will try and get you to perform for nothing. but there are some good guys out there so use your common sense |

I would still get a contract. You are running a business and should get used to it.
In the contract, it should state the time, place, date, what exactly you will be doing, the fee, any retainer fees, balance and clauses about getting paid by a certain time (as you arrive is a good start), buyers name, your name... Now the above is merely suggestions. You can put whatever clause you think might be appropriate, like cancellation clauses (if cancellation without 3 weeks notice half fee still payable...)Do it anyway you like. Do a search here about contracts and you'll get a lot of ideas. You should have a contract for each and every date you perform. Not an all encompasing one. This allows you to make changes if needed due to situations that will arise from the last gig. It's all about learning. But, never deal with another company without a contract. This is also good for your records (including for taxes). |

Doing work with a DJ company got me into doing magic at weddings. Now I can MC the reception, perform magic, and even marry the couple thanks to an online site. I also receive plenty of refferels from doing the magic with the DJ.
I agree completly with: Get paid the night of the show. I have had too many problems with a company waiting for their client's check to clear before paying me. |

And hence why you need a contract.
You can experience the same waiting for client's cheque to clear problem with agents as well. This is why I use retainer fees. Most DJ companies that I know, are paid in full before the event. I personally am paid in full a week before, this also allows for cheque clearing. It also stops the problem of chasing down people at the gig and the old "I forgot to bring it" or "the guy who writes the cheques is on vaction" lines. |

I also own a DJ company called Music, Light, and Magic. I would be more than happy to pass on our legal contract that our company lawyer wrote up for us. You can then just change some of the names etc to fit your company name etc. This is a fantastic contract, professionaly drawn up and also easy for the clients to understand and it protects you and the client very well. Email me and I'll pass it on. This contract can also be adapted for magic shows aswell.
Peter.
