I totally appreciated the compliment Ralph. I think I put myself in the spot I did by speaking in generalities on a thread dealing with specifics. I've tried to stress that not only do I understand where people are coming from in regards to the issues about Criss, but I even agree on some level with them. I don't even like saying that much because I am not the type to voice my opinions over other performers' professional and personal decisions. I'm not saying it's wrong or anything, it's just my personal choice to try and avoid that. Even if I have opinions regarding Criss' approach to magic that are different from his, I still believe he is a hard working and great performer who has managed to do something no single magician has been able to do on this scale since Mark Wilson's Allakazam series back in 1960. To me, that's a pretty huge accomplishment and I know for myself that right now I wouldn't be able to do something like that. Granted, I haven't been doing this as long as Criss, but I'm in no hurry to be under the microscope yet!
"Actually I should have said "some magicians" NOT amature. Some pros do it too." -Dannydoyle This is a good point Danny. If nothing else, maybe all of this talk about entertainers like Criss and David Blaine will start to raise the bar of what we as a fraternity consider important to being a good entertainer and that is improving the the public's image of what we do. Anyone out there performing for the public knows that the stigma of being a magician still has some pretty negative connotations and it can be hard to be taken seriously as an artist and as a performer with that title attached to your name. Perhaps that's why so many magicians are converting to mentalists, psychic entertaniners, paranormalists and any other title that describes them as something other than magician. I include myself in that bunch to an extent. I don't use any kind of title anymore. I only perform mentalism effects and bizarre/geek magic, so when people ask me what I do, I just tell them I read minds and eat razor blades. I don't use any kind of title on my business card, just my logo and contact information. I only give them to people I've hopefully made a strong enough impression on that they won't need to search for the title to remind themselves of what I do. One thing I don't see Criss getting any credit for is that he doesn't slink away from the title of "magician". I think every art has its share of bad habits, misconceptions and "hacks". For some reason though, it seems that magic still carries a more negative connotation in the public eye than other artforms. My guess, and its only a guess, is that most other artforms are constantly evolving. Magic has remained pretty stagnant until the last few years. There are a lot of performers trying to change that image, but I think there are still too many sticking to the "tried and true" and that might be what's contributing to the public's image. While I still have a lot of respect for traditional magic, it doesn't seem to me that the public at large does anymore. Let me clarify what I mean by that. I'm not speaking of the effects in and of themselves. I'm speaking more about character and personna. I think people get tired of seeing the same tricks and hearing the same one-liners, jokes and schtick. There seems to be more diversity in other artforms compared to magic. Take music for example. What a diverse artform created from just 12 little notes! Classical, country, rock, blues, jazz, punk, polka, samba, reggae, and tons more. All from those 12 little notes. Maybe that's why people like Criss Angel, David Blaine and the performers on THEM are getting the national exposure. I think there will always be a place for the traditional magician, just as there will always be a place for classical music. I'm hopeful that maybe we are turning the corner as an artform and joining the other arts as cutting edge, diverse, and evolving. And I believe that guys like Criss are helping that to happen. |

I think Criss is a good magician. But he uses way too many camera tricks and actors in the audience! That's just my opinion...

I agree with almost everything said, but it comes down to this. Chris Angel, just like Blaine and countless good or bag magicians before them, have brought magic back into prime time and all the kiddies and adult are talking about it around the water cooler, and putting money and new tricks in all of our pockets. I still don't like the masked magician though!

It's his image that seems to sell for some reason. Here in the UK most people would just call him a twat, much like we did when Blaine sat in a box above the Thames for far too long.
It's kinda difficult to assess his skill level as he has a huge team of magicians feeding him the material. And lets not forget the price tag on the TV trickery he uses so often. There's hundereds of magicians out there that are far more accomplished than Angel. But the world ain't fair & that's that. As long as the vanity stricken viewers get to see some gym freak flashing his body & flicking his hair no one seems to care. I doubt he would have got anywhere had he been a bald fat ugly dude who spelt his name Christopher. If you are a bald fat ugly dude called Christopher then I'm sorry. But don't give up hope just yet. Not everyone is as shallow as his viewers. |

I think Chris Angel is entertaining. Sure, he's not the epitome of accomplishment in magic, but he is entertaining, and I'm not even his target demographic and I am saying that.
In all performing arts, there are people who make it to the top when others in the industry can easily think of others who deserve it more and are "better." Look at the crap that passes for music these days. As a musician, I am frustrated that so many great musicians are overlooked while such crappy artists are getting world tours and multi-record deals, most of whom don't even write their own songs. But it's the same thing with Criss Angel. He entertains people, and this is the entertainment business.

Like him or not, good reviews and bad, he is still headlining in Vegas and preparing for more TV, he is with the most beautiful woman, and his bank account is still growing, and there is not much dirt on him, personally, I do not care for him, but I do like many of the effects, I would love to see done by others, I like a cross between an old fashioned stage show and a treat performer without the attitude , David Blaine does not have that arrogant attitude, but for me he lacks energy, it's like he is smoking weed and then showing us a trick. Angel’s personality disturbs me.

Too late for editing...
I want to add that the above line can be applied equally to ANY public, limiting it just to American public (as Mencken did) or to Criss Angel alone would be wrong and very restricting in scope.

I think Criss Angel is great! He did use a lot of camera tricks, but that was mostly in the beginning (like the first year of his show).

I got to met and work w/ Criss for the new season of Mindfreak. He is a wonderful guy. We had a lil drama when a girl actually fainted during taping -- funny thing was it happend after he was doing a Induction on everyone lol -- but Criss stopped everything just to make sure she was alright. Even though taping needed to be done ASAP and he needed to be at his Believe show by a certain time he allowed her to take all the time she needed to rest and get some attention.
He REALLY cares for his fans and loves what he does. I think that really comes thru to the audience. It's not about US as entertainers. We shouldn't be performing w/ the intent of impressing OTHER performers. It's for the audience. He's NOT the best Magician, Mentalist, Escape Artist or whatever, I've ever seen. But few do as much as he does. He's a hard worker and I think he's gotten to where he is becuz of his hard work and drive. That's why I admire the guy. ~Robert EC
