How many of you like these puzzles, I try the one in our morning paper everyday. I think they are pretty cool. I wonder if you could use one in an Illusion.

I love Sudoku - they are the biggest craze in the UK at the moment.
I now have a full Sudoku mind reading / mind power routine which works really well - especially for people who think they are good at the puzzles (in the routine you complete a randomly chosen puzzle in minutes without even looking at it. I have the effect manufactured in small numbers bu will hopefully be getting larger numbers soon. |

Is this yours? Workout A spectator selects a random Sudoku puzzle and copies it onto a large blank grid so that everyone can see the puzzle. The magician studies the grid for a few seconds and then turns his back to the puzzle. The magician then begins to instantly call out numbers to the spectator and the entire Sudoku puzzle is completed 'blind' by the magician. |

I don't think, that the "SODOKU-Fever" will hold on very long. I would not create a special effect with SoDoKu as not really everbody knows it.

You may be correct. I do know that Sudoku hasn't really even started in the US yet (there is a really big push at this years US Toy Fair (next week) so I would predict that next Chritmas would see all the games, toys, books, merchandise available in the US as it is in the UK.
As for creating an effect - well Sudoku already is a craze in many countries and therefore a huge number of people are aware and can identify with the puzzles (even if they do not actually do them). They will also now probably always be in newspapers (along side the crosswords) even when the hype dies down (which you are right - it will). With this in mind I would have thought that any audience would have a majority of people 'aware' of what the puzzles are. Unlike for example 'magic squares', which are a completely alien concept to any audience (if audience understood how most of them worked then there would be no 'magic in them'. Of course I may be completely wrong - so I guess we will find out soon. |

I sort of agree with Mysticom and think that Sudoku is well established enough to warrant a magic trick based on it. Certainly the responses I have from people (laymen and magicians) have been positive. Of course you are right Cartelli, any craze will not hold on forever, but hopefully just long enough to enter the public consciousness. I don't think that magic squares are alien to an audience but I do think that Sudoku does make them appear a little more real to an audience.
On top of all that though, I am one of those mad people that actually love Sudoku. All the best, Justin |

It's like any craze......once you know what it is, you become more aware that everyone is doing it. I had never heard of Sudoku until a few weeks ago when I sat next to someone on a plane doing the puzzles. I did my first one in the Delta's airline magazine. It seems now, you see people at lunch, on breaks, doing the Sudoku (sounds like a dance), everywhere you look. One of our neighbors received a Sudoku game for Christmas...looked almost exactly like a scrabble set.
I think the world is ready...go for it Justin! Jim |

These puzzles have been around almost as long as Rubik's Cube.
I'm still waiting for the Crossword Puzzle "craze" to die. |

What kind of awareness is out there about Sudoku? This should give you an idea of Sudoku's popularity.

How do you play the game? Can someone explain to me the sense of putting numbers in? What do you have to do or look for?

Best place to look at is probably http://www.sudoku.com
You can learn the game in about a minute - but it can takes ages to master (if that makes sense). In the UK this Christmas there were three Sudoku books in the top ten bestsellers - now that is popular! My local bookshop has an entire shelf devoted to the puzzle books which is amazing as you can get free puzzles all over the internet and every newspaper has at least one every day.
Make mine a double.

In the newest issue of the magic magacine "Magische Welt" in Germany there is an effect with Sodoku (Filling a Sodoku in an allowed time).
In my opinion it has the problem that it takes to much time too perform and to show that the solution in 100 % correct. And you have to explain the basis as not everbody knows it. |

I understand that completing a complete puzzle can be time consuming (if of course you don't have a system) and therefore dull to an audience. Out of interest - what is the time limit given for this effect?

Hi Justin,
Could you tell us what's included in the marketed trick? Is it a book with instructions? Any special materials included? |
