I'm building a spring loaded camera for a walkaround prop. I am looking for spring that is about 3" in diameter, is no more that two inches compressed and springs out about six to eight inches. Anybody got an Idea? I tried a slinky but it just sorta falls out. it doesn't pop.
Thanks in advance!

I made a similar spring for a pocket watch gag. Use piano wire and bend it around a form a bit smaller in diameter than what you want the finished product to be.

Won't a chunk from a spring snake work?

I thought about that. I just wasn't sure that it could be cut because of the temper of the steel I tried to cut a spring once and it wouldn't budge, then when I heated it; it was ruined.

Ues a Dremmel tool with a cut off wheel or a die grinder with a wheel to cut the spring.

If an old snake can snake spring isn't appropriate then what about a spring from a bed? A 'pocket coil' from a discarded mattress/box spring set?

At party stores they have party poppers that you twist the base and is shoots out the streamers.... anyway they are about $2 and the spring inside is what you are looking for. I use these all the time as they are a good size.

here is some info then you can find them where you like
