I am wanting to do a bizarre close-up show with the premise that as magic occurs all around the world, and because magicians get together at events, I have been able to pick up some magical items from around the world.
I am currently looking at or working on the following effects: Haunted Key (England) Okito Doll (Carribean) Kurotske (variation to make it Celtic) Pulse stop (themed for Philipines using an Anting Anting charm) Richardsons Rice Jar Suspension (China) Dark Museum (Africa) Nana's Necklace (themed for South America) Muscle Pass (Austrailian coin that falls up) I am looking for good effects that would easily be identified with Egypt or the Middle East, and from the Indian subcontinent. These effects need to have a central prop attached to them, although the prop itself does not have to be part of the actual working of the effect. I would also be very interested in hearing your thoughts about other parts of the world that I have not named. If someone has a great Inuit effect, I would love to hear it. The props may have historical or current meaning. Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom. Mannimiguel aka David Noble |

For india you sould do something with ashes in the palm, or a rope trick (bet no one else thinks of that one),
I'm not sure but I have a feeling that cups and balls may have originated in the middle east? All kinds of miracles have been ascribed to tibetan monks also, penetrating through rock etc... Sounds like a good idea, Good Luck! Corona |

For India, check out (horrors!) Swami/Mantra to read some of the feats actually carried out in India by street performers. If you want an Indian theme to some Western trick, that's OK too, but here is your chance to do some real Jadoo! There are plenty of fine Indian props in import stores: carved wooden boxes, brass bowls and bottles, statues of Hindu gods (Ganesh is very popular).
Tarbell describes magic from around the world, and it sticks in my mind that he noted that effects with eggs and live chicks are associated with Egypt. Bizarrists, of course, love scarabs. Some museum gift stores carry scarabs in faux semiprecious materials. You don't necessarily have to gaff a prop like this, just use it to draw focus while you do the dirty work by other means. Another idea that practically suggests itself from your props from all over the world is a Chest of Destiny (see Mind, Myth and Magic or search the Café) with perhaps nine items, each readily identified as being from a different part of the world. Good luck! Yours, Paul |

Thanks so much everyone for these great ideas.
drwilson, I am going with a "chest of destiny" theme. This serves two practical purposes 1) to give an overall theme, and 2) to force me to be able to house all the props for the show within it! Alexandre and Black Hart, thanks for the direction towards those products. It would be helpful to have an slightly fuller effect description so that it is clear what the effects actually are. Alexandre, your Papuan variation of Kurotsuke sounds amazing. Corona, Kindred, and Sinnead, thanks for those ideas. Magically, Mannimiguel aka David Noble |

Pick up a set of the Scarab Beetle Shell and Pea Game from Steven Magic Emporium. It has been reported that the earliest known record of magic was found on the pyramid walls in Egypt. If fact, if memory serves me well it was the shell and pea game (or cups and balls) inscribed in hieroglphics (sp.?).

Doug,
Thanks for the tip! I really appreciate it. This would fit nicely into the show, particularly if it is true about the Egyptians inventing the shell and pea game or cups and balls. Mannimiguel aka David Noble |

If it's not true, make it up! For example, I bet you didn't know the Inuit used those caribou bone glasses with the slits for more than just eye protection. With the glasses on, the Inuit shaman could see into the heart and soul of a person, locate evil spirits harming the person, or even tell if a person was lying. This makes it possible to do a lie-detector effect or locate some hidden object by wearing the genuine caribou bone Inuit glasses you carved in your basement woodshop.

Middle east : we have something called Rasad, meaning a genie protecting a treasure or something valuable...usualy it's an evil spirit....a person with the right talisman can open/see/take/hold/break the spell/protection and take the treasure. (have 4 different routines for this)
Lebanon : Phoenix...lebanon in the ancient times was known as phoenicia in relation to the phoenix bird (duh!) have two different routines for that, a small weird looking ball (handmade with phoenician scriptures on it) a story to go with it, catches fire, turns to ashes....then out of the ashes it floats away....(lots of preperation but worth it) Egypt : if you can find a Tarot Deck with egyptian mythology symbols (got one off the net) there are 1001 routines you can do... hope this helps in a way or another.
Double posters should be shot!

Spellbinder,
What a great idea! The big issue will be carving the genuine caribou bone Inuit glasses! But thanks very much, an excellent starting point. Perhaps the only pair of glasses that would work this way is the one made from the first kill of the season...or something like that. |

Pkg,
Thanks so much for those ideas. I would love to see your Phoenix routine. It sounds amazing. Thanks also for the mention of the Rasad. That will help me with my research for a possible presentation and effect. Do you remember where you got the Egyptian Tarot Deck? |

Drwilson,
Thanks so much for these sites. I have done lots of card magic, but I've never used Tarot cards. Do you know of a book of effects using Tarot cards that you could recommend, or would you simply recommend reworking classic effects? Are any of the above mentioned decks sleight-worthy? I am used to using bikes and I'd like to know if (for example)an Erdnase color change or Shapeshifter would be possible with these cards. |

There are Tarot effects in Turn of a Friendly Card by Jim Magus, The Book of Haunted Magic by Richard Maue, Mind, Myth and Magic by T.A. Waters, The Book of Thoth by Steven Minch, and some online by Peter Marcucci at:
http://www.online-visions.com/bizarre/index.html I unearthed this compilation by searching this forum at the Café, mostly. I can vouch the books, which are all in my library. Yours, Paul |
