There is no "best" in my opinion. I could name some people that really succeeded, there are a few that come to mind, but not one or two "best".

From an escapologist point of view Houdini will win hands down now and in ten years time as well.
From a speckies point of view, providing they are entertained it would be the ea they are watching right now. I can not think of any ea which catches the imagination of the common punter working at this time. None of us have achieved acclaim to the extent of Houdini. |

I have to agree. Except the layman will pick Houdini most times as the best.

I think maybe you guys missed the point of the original post. If I understood it, Dynamike was asking our opinions on who we thought were the three best. Did I get that right Dynamike?
Houdini is a given. I don't think there is any fair comparisons to Houdini because he was an international super star. But there certainly were others. Though he's my pal, I'd say leading the pack is our own Moderator,Steve Baker. You may like him or dislike him, but you have to admit that he was the most visible escape artist of his time and certainly kept escapes going and moving forward. He created some brilliant concepts for escape stunts and growing up was the only escape artist I ever saw on tv. Those would be my top two. As for the third, that's a tough one. It's not because there aren't a lot of other escape artists. It's mainly because I've not seen them. I've heard of many and maybe have seen a clip or two of what they do, but I've never seen enough to make a good judgement. One guy who impresses the heck out of me on this board is Kondini. I say that not having seen him live ever. But I can tell by the way he writes and the insight he gives quite often that he is a real worker and knows the business from the performing side and the business side. Again, my opinions. I'd love to hear who others would pick. |

I would also agree with Carnegie, that the two top ones that come to mind are in fact Houdini and Steve Baker. I don't think it is fair to rank anyone, because they were both very successful. After those two, there are many others, but I would classify them as honorable mention.

Dynamike, I don't know if you remember me or not, but we have met before. We met when I was doing my old Tuesday night, 2-show gig at one of the many McDonalds restaurants that we did shows for in Detroit back in 1995 or 1996. I believe that you had the chance to see my straitjacket escape that night and I had a chance to see some of your really cool sponge ball routines and card magic. Anyway, great question.....which 3 EAs are the best? Santini "The Dark Master of Escape", Houdini, and James Randi. In my opinion, these are the three top escape artists of ALL time. PM me if you want to catch up on the local scene.
Cheers, Mike

Doing an escape at a McDonalds! Now there is a venue I never thought of working! Way to think out of the box man! Of course you take your life into your own hands every time you walk into one of those places!
I have wrestled with this one for some time. I have set and then discarded various criteria for “best”. I was going to limit my list to just those artists I have seen working. But then I remembered that I have actually seen so few. I’d hate to be unfair to some really great artist just because I haven’t seen them work. Then I thought of “historical best”. That is, those individuals that kept the art alive. I’d have to say that Grandfather Houdini would be number one on the list. He single handedly invented the art, as we know it. Second would be Steve Baker because he actually took the art in a new direction during a time when the straightjacket had become a magic prop. Third would have to be James Randi for continuing to keep escapes, as escapes, on the tube during a time that even magicians were not getting much television time. As we make our list of three best we will probably always overlook John Novak, David DeVal, and Lee Jacobs. Three who kept the art alive by performing and publishing (based on their experience). The three produced some of the “must have” references in the field today. Then there are the Kondini’s, Mark Tripp’s, and Mumblepeas’ of the world that have just gone out season after season and worked their butt’s off earning a living performing and who are arguably just as good as “the best”. Plus there are the Cannon’s who are totally invested in keeping the art alive as a unique and stand-alone performance art form. And Dixie Dooley with his multi volume DVD set focused on the field. And we have all left out Dean Gunnerson. I believe that Dean is the only EA to be featured (as an EA) on the cover of leading Magic magazines in modern times. In the past 10 years or so he was a stand-alone presence on TV representing the field. I don’t think that he should be overlooked. I can’t think of one EA, in recent years, that has garnered as much international publicity as has our own Dean! Now you know why this took such a long time to respond to! I agree with Ken above. The best contemporary artist today does not even come close to the legacy left by Harry H. And “best” from a spectator’s point of view is simply that guy/gal that is entertaining them right now! This was a nice brain teasing question.

Missed Thomas! Missed Steranko! Who else did I miss? I know that I probably missed one or two others too!
I also shamefully left out Norm Bigelow. Norm was another struggling to keep the art alive during the dry spell. Again, this reminds me of how hard this question was for me!
