I am needing a quick, visual way to produce three 18" silks. Would you recommend a 6" Crystal Cube? If so, where can I buy a good one? I see these all over the place, for around the same price, but I am unsure of the manufacturer. Who makes and/or sells the best one?
I'm not sure if all 6" Crystal Cubes are spring loaded or not, but I beleive I would want this feature. I played around with a smaller one that was not spring loaded, and it seems the spring loaded type might work better with silks. One other question: When the silks are produced with the spring loaded type, do they lie flat? Or do they appear to fill up most of the cube? Thanks for your help! Ickle Pickle has them.
You can have the silks appear "fluffed", rather than flat. It may limit quantity a slight bit. Three 18" silks should pose no problems. ~michael

Michael to the rescue!
I have found them everywhere, but I didn't know which one was best. Most places don't specify who the manufacturer is. Ickle Pickle makes pretty good stuff, so I'll try to go with theirs. Is the spring pretty durable on these things? I was worried about the production appearing flat, so knowing they can appear 'fluffed' eases my mind. Is there a tip to achieving this that you could share without exposing any methods? If not, don't worry, you have already helped a lot and I guess I will go ahead and buy one. Regan

Follow the directions and play in the mirror. Bunch the silks as you load them. They will spring open upon release.
Another FYI... There is an import Die to Ball Tray on the market that isn't totally terrible. I redecorated mine a few years ago to look like a Rubik's cube. I produce 6 18" silks from it, and it could probably take more. I just use one for each of the colors on the cube. Just wad them up and shove them in (don't roll, fold, or wrap). They explode when the change happens. ~michael

Thanks Michael.
I'll do a search on the Die to Ball Tray. Regan

Want to have some real fun? Instead of one of the usual loads, use live roaches, a white mouse, or a lizard.
(What me cause trouble?) I have used an empty candy bar wrapper too! It can be very funny. Bob Magic By Sander |

You know I wanna have fun Bob. I'll keep those production ideas in mind.
I found the Die to Ball Tray Michael. Looks interesting. I don't particularly like the die, but your Rubik's Cube idea is grand. Regan

Magic Hands of Germany used to make a version of this that was pretty nice. The die on this import outfit is pretty junky to look at, but it functions. A little TLC it can be made more attractive. The pattern on the tray is pretty bizarre also, but it is surprisingly deceptive (at least mine is).

Yeah, I noticed that tray pattern. It is different to say the least. Are the dots on the die just painted on? Or are they recessed?

Are you really talking about the Pop Cubes that used to come from Tannen's in the 60s? (The 3" or 4" ones were about $1.50 each.)
I make my own and used them to teach statistics. Since they will fold flat and pop into a cube I opened my book to "Random Block Design"! Pop! Pop! Pop! It will make college students think the prof is drinking or taking something, again. But they did pay attention. Who knows what the nut would do next? Mind were made from the good colored poster board that I can't find anymore. It takes a good rubberband, a homemade wire hook, a staple machine and some glue. (Money is no object to me! Spend, spend, spend!) I might could scan in the pattern if I could get my new printer working. Scheme! Bob Sanders Magic by Sander |

I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not. Michael is the expert on this. I'm not an expert builder like you and Michael. I have been getting my feet wet lately though. A pattern would be nice either way. You don't have a pattern for a 6" spring loaded crystal cube do ya'?

The pop-up cubes are not the same thing. I have only found a single company that makes them. Maybe they are patented? I'd imagine making some for personal use wouldn't be a problem. Marlboro use to give away a pop-up dodecahedron for smoker's to keep their "miles" coupons in. It was similar in construction the the vanishing lamp in Norman Hunter's book, Successful Conjuring.

I used to smoke Marlboro Lights , but I quit right around the time those miles were out and about.

:) Regan Posted: Jan 29, 2006 1:21pm I have found another item called "Crystal Production Box" made by Encore Magic. Can someone tell me anything about this? It claims to be, "one of the most deceptive pieces of magical apparatus on the market today". It looks small, about 4", so I don't know about load capacity, but an add I saw stated you could produce a 4" x 32' streamer from it. Should work fine for the routine I am working on. I believe they make one that is a little larger, but I can't find it on the H.P site. I need to make a choice on which type of box I am going to buy within a week or two, so I really need your help to make an informed decision. I may start a new topic on this box if I don't many responses. I thought I would go ahead and give it a try here first. Thanks! Regan

Bob,
Me correct a schemer like you? Bill, Thanks. I am probably going to go with the Ickle Pickle Crystal Cube. I am trying to get some info on one other similar prop called Crystal Production Box, but right now I'm leaning toward the Crystal Cube. Regan
