Using the major arcana only...an ancient woodon box padlocked in the center of the table with a candle atop. Place facedown are paper photocopies of each card. The participant clears mind and is open to psychic energy that guides the hand to choose a significator. Once chosen, participant writes given name across picture (quill and dragons blood)and ritualistically burns pic. While the wise one explains the significance of the chosen card. Then wise one opens locked box and removes deck from velvet drawstring bag. Therefore "the cosmos" have confirmed the request and brought fourth the significator card. What do you think,my council?

I think it is great. I've made a bunch of these decks before and they ROCK!

That's a pretty involved use of the ID. Cool. Is there any particular way you stack the ID? Which Tarot deck do you use?

Hiya Slim,
What size tarot deck would you recommend (standard or the smaller versions)? The reason I ask is that I find the standard size a lot more difficult to handle and was wondering if this impacts on the effect at all. Simon |

The R/S is a little problematic when you use the larger tarot cards. You must modify the application to make the larger cards work correctly. The smaller ones are easy.

Using photocopies is a smart application, since most people are not familiar enough with the identities of the tarot to do a more streamlined presentation.
The idea of applying the ID principle to tarot is in Waters' Mind, Myth & Magick, but he admitted the drawback that modern Rider Waite packs aren't very good for this, as it has not borders (just a crosshatch design that extends to the edges) -- and decks without borders are less than optimal for reversed-card effects, especially at close quarters (too great a chance for flashing). A discovery I made: the 1968 printing of the Waite deck, called the Albano-Waite pack, has a face that's familiar to audiences comfortable with the modern Waite pack, but a back that is simply white with a small gold sun in the center -- making it perfect for this application. Aside from a photo copy a lay out of duplicate cards could be used as well. To get off topic, you can use an adaptation of the Nikola system for a complete stack (to include both the Major and Minor Arcana.

Neil,
Is this deck still being produced or is it a collector's item? Slim King, Thanks for the info on the 21 count for ID and for the issue of R/S larger cards. |

I've had the same problem with Specialty ID's as Neil. The backs are "Very" important.
The main problem as I see it, is only showing 11 cards. Much different than showing 26.

Mannimiguel: they're no longer made, but available on ebay from time to time.
Slim: even though your reversible cards are the major arcana, there's nothing that says you can't include some of the minor arcana to pad out the pack (DF if using an ID setup, DB if using a Brainwave setup). Best, Neil

Similar to this effect below, Sir Real, (heh) but I like your pres better, frankly.
http://www.murphysmagic.com/s.nl/sc.2/SS.......6278/.f Good tip on the card backs, Neil. I'm lucky to have a ma and pop book store downtown that has an absoutely huge section on tarot and metaphysical, I should be able to find something there.

Many thank you's for all the input and kind words.Slim and Neil much gratitude for the guiding words on creating such a deck. The ID is such a strong effect it seems to remain in the minds of those that experience it long after other things fade.I have always felt it would fit well in a magickal tarot ritual.Interesting link Mystician I never realized there was a tarot effect using this principle.Again many thanks.

Sir Real
I like the sound and images it brings to mind. If I might be bold enough to suggest instead of photocopies, to keep with the style you are setting up, using some of the online art out there- depends upon the deck you use- and PRINT in a deep red/brown, or sepia/blood red etc. on heavy tissue or rice paper if burning- OR an appropriate looking aged paper or vellum if they will take it with them as a reminder of their experience. Hello Kay,yes perhaps printing the images in such a manner would add to the ambience of the workings.Either flash paper or burning rice paper would give a nice effect without any smoke to speak of.As I would like to burn the effigy, that is my preference when it is my intent to release a "request" into the universe. But many times smoke is impractical. I am not sure what deck I will use. When I followed the link in Mystician's earlier post to the "Major Arcanna effect" I thought about purchasing that one for this presentation, but I may have to create my own just to be sure what I am getting.

Search in here for illustrations, or do the google thing, there is a site out there that has line drawings of the Rider Waite style images, and I think the Versailles. may have originally been a layout for color your own tarot. Just a thought, If I can find it in my mash of bookmarks, I will repost, but I know it is in here somewhere!
anyone else have a better memory than me today?? k
