How have some of you promoted a "mature" audience show? Our benefit show will be tailored towards late teens and adults. Three of us will be performing parlor & stage effects using cards, coins, mentalism, cups & balls, etc. Although there is no risque patter or themes, there will be no children's magic. So, we do not want an audience of children. Utilizing radio spots, printed ads, and posters we want our market to understand that the show is for older audiences.

Comedy clubs never attract children.
sell tickets in the right places and simply state over 18, shouldn't be too tough.

Hi daryl
Welcome to the magic Café. On my business card it says, "suitable for all audiences, and any occasion" I don't understand why so many children's magicians think the only way to entertaine kids is through kiddie magic. I do no kiddie magic, and everyone is welcome to all of my shows. My comedy club routine is "G" rated, and supervised children are always welcome, (not to the comedy club) but to all other venues. I really don't understand why you don't want kids. Them little suckers are so cute, but watch out I think they are making plans to replace us all some day. Al Angello

I think Al is asking a better question rather than just giving you the answer. Except for day care events, I rarely do a different show for kids than I would do for their parents. I also rarely do a different show for CEOs and Congressmen than I do for anyone else. While I may dress better and charge more, the show is likely very similar.
I will admit that I dumb a show down for an outdoor fair. For TV, I make adjustments to facilitate the cameraman and avoid exposure in tight shots. Cordless microphones are probably used less by TV than anywhere else. Otherwise, costume, music and colors are about the greatest differences. Never forget that if magic fails visually, it fails. However if you want to do adults and adults only then here is my suggestion
Idepending on the size of your show perhaps you should look into charities. in essence you sell the charity the show plus a cd-rom with all the marketing images needed to sell. the charity uses the cd to print out the posters and whatever people come to watch and pay money which 50% or so goes to charity the rest goes to you. what this also does is get you free publicity very easily in each town you go to and the money can be high. now if you could tell us a little more about your show this would help us help you |

If your show has a "G" rating then just perform the show for the adults and not play to the kids. look at lance Burtons show he is for the most part a adult entertainer but there are still kids in his audiance. even though there are kids in the audiance he plays to the adults. Also you may not want to go for an 18 and over age groupe since you said you wanted your show to inculde teens and this whould in tern lose the 15 to 17 year olds in your audiance. hope this helps

You must also remember that when people hear "magician' they often think "kid's entertainer' regardless of your act.
Nothing worse then showing up to a wedding and having the 10 kids in the audience of 100 sitting at the front and yelling and generally being kids. The rest of the audience turn off and you have to bring them back again |

A theme here that I find interesting is that several people don't do different shows for adults vs. children. You can add me to that list. 90% of my material is suitable for children and adults. I usually just tweak the presentation a bit if it is an audience of children.
