Does anyone know of plans for a bucket out of wood? I would like to build two seperate buckets from oak and cherry; one for close up (do a mouse production) and another for stage... I know the formula for building it round; however, I don't want ot make it in a weird "un-bucket-like" shape... (ie., how do you figure theincline from top to bottom... if it is three inches at the top and two and a half at the bottom- plus your angled cuts on the side, will the incline be more like a bowl or too "slim" looking- not sure if this makes sence?)

Hey, Bryan:
Building a bucket with rounded staves sounds like a tough project for even a fairly advanced woodworker -- my hunch would be to build the staves over-thickness, then round them out once the bucket's completed with a spokeshave and various planes (or turning, depending on available equipment). This link might prove helpful: http://www.woodmagazine.com/wood/story.j....../340.xml Leland |

You might want to take Leland's advice. To do a reall "cooper" job requires specific long term soaking and shaping of wooden planks. I saw the process once at a theme park, it is pretty work and time intensive.

Leland, that website you gave was exactly what I am lookinf for; however, instead of each stave being say- "3 at the top and "3 at the bottom, what is the formula to make it say- "3 at the top and "2 at the bottom so you get that bucket-like incline. A rounded bucket isn't what I am really going for... I like the traditional duck or rabbit bucket - I would just like to build it smaller... Maybe I'am over complicating it? I am just afraid of making the "slope" of the bucket slope inward too much...

Hey, Bryan:
The best I can recommend at this point is a search of either the Rockler or Fine Woodworking sites online or simply calling Rockler (or Woodcraft) and describing your need. I vaguely recall having seen a book that describes the formula for working out the math involved -- sorry I can't offer more concrete details. Not sure what equipment is available to you, but for the smaller project I'd turn from solid or glued-up stock. Best of luck! Leland |

A trip to the craft store about now should turn up some small wooden buckets- I have a collection I have obtained for just a couple dollars each, though they are used for a non-magical hobby at this time- they are a light basswood feel to them, tapered, and have a rope handle at the top. You will need to add the gimmick and lid, but it will be pretty easy to do with these.
The local Michaels or hobby lobby type store should be able to get them if they do not already have them. k

In the event they are not available, you can always consider using the Paper mache' route, and form a bucket shape over the sized item in plastic pail, and paint it up or use, and depending on your theme, I have seen a plastic pail marketed as a duck bucket. ;}
