That turns the menu into an obvious magician's prop. It weakens the effect, in my opinion. Tony |

Another 'winner' from Alakazam!
Educating Archer is fantastic. So much stuff to use. Some say you have to have a huge personality to perform these tricks, but I don't think that is necessarily so. (and that aint me admitting I haven't got one! ) Tossed Out Deck, Tragic Square and Komedy Killer are so easy to pull off. A couple of downsides: As I have discovered with other DVD's, you have to have (or buy) some quite expensive (or incredibly rare) props to complete some of the effects. The performances and explanations are on two different discs which is a pain in the proverbial if you want to view an explanation right after the relevant performance. Whilst I'm in a (very minor) moan mode, whilst Archer's comedy is extremely funny in performance, he is more irritating than Simon Lovell in explanation. Quite often losing his track, adlibbing, and just very unfunny lengthy explanations. Just get to the point John. But at £25? Incredible value for money! |

Last time I spoke to John he said that he was planning to get in shape... No idea why he chose the shape of a beer barrel though!!
Great DVD... Great big cuddly performer who never ceases to make me laugh... More of the same please John |

Congratulations John - it's about time that your brilliant talents became more recognized!
Come visit NYC soon ... I'll give you a special guest spot at my one-man show Strange and Unusual Hobbies any time you like! It's raw and unleashed, there's even a bar ... I think you'd have a great time! Your mad (though apparently irritating to some!) pal, Simon |

I have many of your DVD's and books (how else could I make the comment?) - it's just that zany style of yours does my head in when I'm trying to concentrate on getting the job done! I can even 'hear' you when reading your stuff! :) Roger |

Hey Roger,
Thanks, and valid criticism I suppose. The thing is when a performer releases a DVD you have to remember that they are not a trained teacher so if there will be a weakness anywhere it will be in the explanations (Hopefully.) I was just concerened that everything got covered so it was maybe a tad overcooked at times. I'll try harder next time ;-) Take care John |

Hey John,
Of all the DVD's that I have bought (I have a bunch!), Educating Archer and Blindfold Tips are my FAVORITES! I have watched them both many times, and I laugh EVERY time! I found your explanations to be quite good and very detailed, I also found the explanation DVD to be as entertaining as the performance DVD. Heck, my wife even likes you! Komedy Killer and Spelling Test are FANTASTIC! You ROCK DUDE! I look forward to future project from you. Later PW
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

I AM a trainer, and it's probably the expectation that the 'training' should have been spot on that irked me a bit. Soz! Also, I spoke to Peter Nardi the other day and we discussed that some of the "explanation's audience" weren't miked up - that may have accounted for a bit too! Anyway, "Tragic Square" and "Komedy Killer" may just be the missing links in my 'act' (for what it is) I've even ordered a wallet from Hank Lee just for the latter. A truly brilliant routine - thanks. Now, sod off and make us another DVD! :) Roger |

Hurry on over John ... the first pint (or three) are on me!
As for explanations on DVD's it is a tough line ... do you over or under explain? People who know me know that my thing is to over explain and, somewhat like John, ramble on a bit! However, I aim my explanations at the lowest common denominator because I don't just want people to just like the trick but to be given more than enough explanation to not only do it but to understand the effect and why it works! So I aim at the absolute beginner if possible so that anybody can do the stuff with practise. It may not be the ideal way, especially if you are a seasoned magician watching, but at least it's a way! Your mad buddy, Simon |

Archer's DVD not only has excellent material on it but if you just want to be entertained watching his style is a real pleasure. He has an enviable technique
that he has fine tuned. It may be called "Educating Archer" but it is really Archer educating other performers. |

Greetings -
Used my take on "Spelling Test" in real world conditions... It kills. This DVD set has one of the highest "bang for the buck" ratios I've seen in a long time. Great thinking, great routines, great mentalism/magic. The best advice? When asked how to get "good". Archer replies..."...gig and gig and gig and gig..." Sums it up nicely, don't you think? Pax, Br. I too will add to the chorus of approvals. Put it on your xmas present list!
I share the mild criticisms that the explanations should not be put on a seperate disc. Also that John does teach the effects well enough but by his own admission is not a great teacher. Other than that I think we see some great comedy mentalism and some very useful approaches and methods.

Komedy Killer gets my vote for the best on the DVD. Although I like all the presentations on the DVD, this is one that I really enjoyed. It took a trick that I had, but I just considered dreadful to perform and made it into a show piece.

Hello all!
I'm going to Order John's DVD Set "Educating Archer". There are so many (only) good reviews. Just read the comment from Roger Kelly about his opinion of downsides: "As I have discovered with other DVD's, you have to have (or buy) some quite expensive (or incredibly rare) props to complete some of the effects" Can anybody please tell me which performance pieces need such stuff and is it really so hard to find/buy!? Is there a good chance to perform most of John's "Tricks" with "regular" household and/or magicians Gimmicks? I appreaciate any answers! Cheers, Jarod PS.: John, good luck at the Magic Castle and lots of success!
It's not the Trick. It's the Magician!
