I would be interested, what you consider to be magic icebreakers and which ones you have tested in real life. Mind you, I am not looking for tricks that impress girls. No, just quickies that maybe get a laugh and some astonishment. For example the following ones, none of which I personally own, and which I IMAGINE to serve that purpose:
cigapen cigarette up the nose then there is also an effect that I forgot the name to, it has to do with bending a credit card with your mind and there is another pen by jessie feinberg who invented the cigapen that is also a pen that you seem to shove into your flesh (your arm). yesyes, it might freak people out, but it will also get their attention instantly, which, the way I mean this thread to be understood, is valued just as highly. then there would be a trick like the web...but that is already a small routine and kind of does not fit with the rest of the tricks I mentioned. what I am looking for is an icebreaker that doesn't even require you to say hi (I am slightly exaggerating), let's just say your job is to get people into a restaurant...and you could say: Sir, if you don't come in now I will shove this cigarette up my nose...and of course he will stand still and say: well....I'm waiting....cuz I'm not coming in... and then you do it. then his eyes pop out. then you show him the menue. you see the direction I'm heading? Any tricks you know including the ones I mentioned, comments would be greately appreciated. Thanks, Mark

If I'm out and about and want to break the ice with a quick little effect I use the d'lites.
Just a quick couple of moves, appear, dissapear, in the mouth and out the eye, that's normally enough to catch their attention, you don't have to talk or introduce yourself, just do it. And they are nice and bright to attract others around to come over a look, someone will make a comment like do that again or show me another... while I'm doing that it gives me time to look at the audience to see if anyone is smoking... wearing a strap watch, suitable ring etc.. etc... something that will link me into another effect I already have setup but will look impromptu. |

My suggestion is to keep the tricks looking impromptu.
A couple of videos are: "IceBreakers" by Michael Ammar. "On the Spot" by Greg Wilson. "Ultimate Impromptu Magic" by Dan Harlan. If you're not adept at sleight of hand, there are also props that look like regular objects. Check the magic shops. |

I second what Jaz has suggested and also Greg Wilson off the cuff dvd, has some cool stuff that is on the spot.
But what you are asking to find is probably described as eye catcher, or attention getter rather than ice breaker. Magnets works well, any effect where something floats or moves with nothing attached to it, or what it seems to be that way. Coin Roll , is quite good to get attention.

My number one icebreaker with adults is handing them a sponge bunny. I do the retention pass telling them to throw this away. They always reach out. I open my hand with nothing. They are startled, baffeled, amased or confused what happened. It is easy to take from there.

I really love the thing Bill Malone does on his on the loose series.
He seems to throw up cards. Guess this would be a fun gag to use as a Icebreaker. |

One thing I like to do at a resturant is to use the IT reel and make someone a rose out a cocktail napkin. It's easy to attatch the IT to the table when you reach for the napkin. Then as your twisting it wrap the IT around and make the rose float. Then when you give the spectator the rose they 9 out of 10 times ask you to do something else.

Another little thing you can do with the rose if you don't have the IT reel is to steal your delight and light it up then give it to her.

An amusing play on words.... you remove a coin from your hand and ask how many coins are left - they say none - you open your hand and there's now a nun in your hand "that's correct but how on earth did you know that" a quicky fun trick - can be used as an ending to other tricks... or quick opener to select an audience member for the next trick...
catch you later

I usually carry a "mis-made" bill gimmick with me. I'll show the mismade bill saying something like "Look what I got out of the ATM machine". I then proceed to fold it and change in into a regular dollar bill.
