The Brass Cap & Coin Monte – My Review
Effect: 3 brass caps (shown empty) cover 3 coins (2 x 5ps and a one pound coin) the spectator is told to follow the £1 coin. The spectator never finds the £1 coin. Then you make it very easy and remove one of the 5p coins, you even mark the one pound for them, the caps are mixed in the simplest manner possible and the spectator is once again asked to find the £1. When all the caps are lifted, the £1 is under neither of the two caps you have been playing with, but the one you removed before the mixing! You Get: Everything you need for the trick, including written instructions (which can be a little hard to follow, but with this it’s a lot better to be original) You need to get/know: You could use some imaginative thinking to make this examinable if you wanted, but I see no need Preparation: There is a little bit of preparation. If you’re good with words and making jokes, then you can probably set it up when rummaging in your magic bag “trying to find it”. I personally think it’s best though if you set it up and leave it on your table throughout your performance and remember it halfway through, it hardly takes up any space Pros: > If caps mixed slowly the pound really does seem to “jump” from cap to cap. > You always win, this is a no risk game and so it is safe to bet money on > Entirely repeatable however many times you want Cons: > Not something you can just carry around and do > Cannot be set up before you go out and sit in your pocket Overall: I really do like this. This is the one thing that I got for Christmas that went straight into my Christmas show later that evening. I love the reactions of people seeing this, they’re so sure they can’t be wrong! 8/10 After Thoughts: If you set up a bill as shown in the Raven DVD, and offer this as a prize for if they find the £1 coin, then you can disappear this as you offer your sympathies, also, there are other ways to use the Raven in various presentations as this, and it serves as a nice partner if you have it. If not this on it’s own is still great, so don’t worry |

I realise that your post is about 6 years old but I have a question for you, perhaps you can answer it for me. I have the chance to purchase the effect second hand but the seller has lost the instructions for it. As a senile geriatric is it going to be quite easy to work it out without them or not. I am quite keen to buy as I have just given a lecture/workshop on several different presentations of the Monte type routines and this could be a follow up. The lecture was to the junior section of the Manchester Circle of Magicians, like you in the UK.

This is an old review of an interesting effect. Many thanks Fandango if you are still around on Magic Café!
Since then there have of course been other versions of the gaffed three coin monte theme. Some have used metal bottle tops, others have integrated a casino chip. A review of Colin Gilbert's effect called ' Easy Monte' would now seem to be called for. It uses three black innocent looking bottle caps and the coin. I believe that it is sold excluively by MagicTricks.co.uk. It does not appear to use the same methodology/gaffs as the Brass Cap and Coin Monte..........and it is also a shame that Eddie Gibson's 'Kangaroo Coins' are no longer made. |
