I have been told by my wife that we are going to have dinner at a place where Oz Pearlman will perform. From her description, it sounds like a stroller gig. Because he is a performer of some reputation, how does one determine how much to give, tip or whatever?
This will be my first time in this situation.

Well, his "reputation" isn't exactly the greatest. He's a salesman for Penguin, and might not even have a reputation on the basis of his magic alone. Tip him on the basis of the quality of his performance, not on the fact that you've heard his name before. |

Oz Pearlman is an awesome magician and a very friendly guy... Concerning your question on how much to tip him, you´ll decide when you watch him perform...

I liked him at his lecture. He was gracious with his time and helped me out with a false shuffle.

I will say tip him for what you think he is worth after you see him. I have only seen him do the demo's for penguin and his videos from penguin.

He may not be the BEST on penguin, but that is because he is SELLING effects. He isn't putting his own style into his performance. Just because he doesn't seem good on penguin, doesn't mean that he isn't good in a resturaunt, or any other paid event in which he performs for real people. He is probably really good. Tell us what you thought of his performance.

In my opinion, Oz is a stellar performer and a very good magician. I believe you should go into the situation as if you had no idea it was him and tip him as to how good he is.

I don't think what scorch said was wrong. He said to tip based on the quality of the performance which is exactly right. In addition, he never said that Oz wasn't a great guy and didn't even give a personal opinion about what he thinks of Oz, just that his reputation might not be the best based on what others have to say.
I, for one, would agree with tipping based on how satisfied you are with the effects and his overall manner of performing. |

You can easily dislike Oz from his demos and videos and for his association with Penguin, and still enjoy his performance in person. I went to one of his lectures last year and was pleasantly surprised. His material was mostly very well thought out. When it came time to hawk his Penguin stuff the other Oz we know and hate seemed to briefly emerge, but then subsided as he took time after the lecture to help people with stuff they were working on.

Chichi711 is completely right. In the DVD yes, in the demo no!

He's a good card mechanic, but has no personality. You should tip him based only on that nights performance and how much you enjoyed it, and not on his past reputation.
Stick to the classics,

I think we need to consider that Oz has to demo hundreds of tricks, learn the new ones in a short period of time, and run a business at the same time. It's his job. I think he does it remarkably well. He may not have the best technique on the demos, but who would performing so many tricks. I think we need to cut him some slack, boys. I bet his act is a lot more polished. How about keeping an open mind?
Life is a test. It is only a test. If this had been a real life, you would have been given further instructions on where to go, and what to do.

Docelk,
Don't you think Oz could have spent a few days researching and learning before performing? I mean Michael Ammar researches for months for his videos, Ben |

I thought we had freedom of speech here. Some of my posts have been removed. They were in perfect accordance with the rules here, so why are they gone??? Who is the person to remove them????
I just said I cannot believe people make assumptions about Oz`s reputation just because they don`t like penguin magic, which is ridiculous. Is this statement offending anybody? What a joke. |

My guess is Oz saw them, or a "Close" friend and reported the thread.

KRZY4KRDs is right. All scandals aside, you should tip him according to his performance.

Enough with this talk about Penguin and demo work he's done elsewhere. Those topics if they need to be raised and addressed are in other forums/topics. This topic has no place for such politics. You think your wife cares? Hardly. We are talking about your wife and how much $ you should hand over if she is entertained. It's all about HER otherwise I doubt you'd even be at that restaurant. Good man!
If any table worker does a good job and puts a smile on her face, what's that worth to YOU? Is it worth at least $10 or maybe $20? Assuming the wait staff is to see 15-20% tip for serving your table, if the table worker does something for you and your wife that will leave her talking about the evening, is it worth at least $20? I once paid a worker $25 after making a napkin rose and five minutes of very tasteful and good magic. Some could argue that I was a bit cheap as $25 doesn't go far in New York. Hehehehe. Now I could of made napkin roses all *** night for free but he was real good about remembering my guests names and brought an element of entertainment to our table that had them engaged. He also spared me as I'm not always in the mood to perform. When at a restaurant I'm going to eat and if anyone is to be entertaining, it won't be me. Also don't overlook the opportunity to "customize" his entertaining your table. Any effect that includes the use of her name or maybe an anniversary. Approach him with maybe some detail that only you and your wife know about to be used in an effect. Not that it's needed, but maybe a little something to prove your love for her? Use your imagination and with Pearlman's help you can make it an evening she won't forget. I do it all the time so that it goes beyond just a magician doing great tricks at our table. Considering that sort of situation can't be bought in a box, is it worth a few more dollars to you now? Have a great time and let a performer help you make it even better. |
