The key is to use notebooks and a pen instead of a computer. I write about anything, not just magic, but, lyrics, problems, solutions, ideas, people I've met, and other recollections. If an idea really stands out I act on it quickly. Otherwise, they will get buried like the lyric,"Plans that either come to naught, or a half a page of scribbled lines."

I already posted, but I do talk about this in my book "Theatrical Magic, The Book." I discussing one of the scripts I discuss how two unrelated and separate ideas in my journal eventually became the performance piece THe Mambo Scarves. It was a 2-3 year process, but the end result may not have happened if I hadn't kept a journal of ideas...

I keep notes in a "Hipster PDA", which is just a bunch of notecards with a clip to hold them together. I've tried notebooks and electronic PDAs, but I actually USE the notecards. The great thing is, I can keep notes on lots of different topics, then file and arrange them (or transcribe them) when I get home. I've even designed templates for about 20 different kinds of notes including my prayer list, logging my diabetes, and tracking projects and tasks.
When at home, I just keep text notes in Notepad2. My biggest secret is my file folder structure, which lets me keep those notes organized. In the past couple of months, I've even started scripting! Hipster PDA: http://www.43folders.com/2004/09/03/intr......ter-pda/

I don't keep a journal but I do have loads of notebooks and a couple of folders and stuff on the computer I have been writing since I got into magic... I stopped using notebooks exclusively in exchange for a folder so I could organise my thoughts better. in it I write anything that inspires me, anything I find remotely interesting related to what I do, script idea's, plots, tricks, all sorts...
The most I have spent on a notebook is $49... I think its important to respect your own thoughts enough to do this, because unbeknownst to me there maybe a hit show hiding in amongst all that ****e... I tried writing a journal everyday like in the artists way but lost interest. but I would say to those who have never tried it have a go you may learn something about yourself.... I did... Declan

My penmanship hasn't changed since I left the fourth grade. It's like an old true friend. My handwriting is mine and mine alone, it is a physical extension of what my mind created right there in front of me.
I don't hold the same connection to typewriters or computer screens (I use them as editing and refinement tools).

I also do lots of thumbnail sketches, which are impossible on a computer without a graphics program and touch-sensitive pad. Forget the mouse for quick sketching: a pencil or ball-point pen is far looser and more spontaneous. But the biggest reason I gave up on keeping notes on a machine is that I like to sit in my easy chair with a cup of coffee, or in bed at night, and flip pages and see what's there. Maybe I'm just very old-fashioned...

This is so helpful,
I love the hipster PDA, brilliant. I also just got "The magic of Michael Ammar" and he has a really good system, there are forms you xerox right out of the book, and fill out one per trick. you list key patter lines, appropiate age groups, environments, etc. etc.. You do this for all tricks/routines. Then you make 5 copies for each on multi colored paper (for different age groups), and when you want to plan a show, just go through the notebook and pick out a few appropriate pages. This is very exciting, everyone whould go get this book if (like me) you have trouble getting the notebook idea to work just right (or if you want to learn some truly magical routines).

Keeping a journal helps me organize all of my ideas, tricks, etc. It also is a great tool when I'm brainstorming. I come across ideas that I wrote down a long time ago in the past and I come up with new ideas for the old "notes". My journal plays an important role in my magic.
