The Chinese Movies of the gambling Genre are, in my opinion, the greatest ever produced. Unfortunately, you really must speak chinese in order to understand them fully. Subtitles are fine, and all, but nothing beats hearing the dialouge.

They have everything a good card cheating movie should have, and the actors do their own card moves!

Check out the God of Gamblers series, and The Con Man, starring Andy Lau. These will get you started.

Thanks for mentioning some other Chinese movies to check out. Will do so.

Have you seen the Stephen Chow spoof on "God of Gamblers"?

I have yet to see "God of Gamblers". Anyone seen it?

There are several versions and incarnations of this character (first played by Chow Yun Fat I believe ) but the first one is my favourite . There are also other " Knock- Off " movies with the "King" of gamblers . Some of these chinese gambling movies range from the very clever to the very comical or ridicoulous . The God of gambler series has some great ( although unrealistic) gambling moves with cards, dice in a cup manipulated by a hair, tiles etc. I don't know if I spell it right but I believe the chinese title for the God of Gamblers is " Do Son " . These movies are great fun to watch ,even with subtitles ...try any video store that caters to chinese titles ...I got mine in Toronto .

I figure I could get them at the Asia Pacific Mall (along with every other movie on the planet whether it's still in theatres or not...). Is that where you picked yours up, Dowser?

It probably was...it was my friend who actually picked it up for me but it was a long time ago...we used to go for chinese food in Mississauga or Toronto every weekend. You are perfectly right about the availability of every movie on the planet though ...lol .

In regards to a previous post, Do Son is the title for God of Gamblers. And some of the stuff, while not realistic to us, is very stylistic and fun to watch.

The Last Casino (2004) (TV)

This is film I recommend to the Café some time back and I agree with this reviewer at a film site as I also think it was one best I have seen but films are a matter of taste I think so some may not like it.
The plot: A university teacher recruits 3 bright students to learn the art of card counting and makes them play, and win, for him.

I second the comment that this movie is one of the best of 2004. I'll actually go as far as to say this is THE best movie of 2004! The brilliant writing, convincing acting, skilled directing, and all other aspects of this film come together wonderfully to create a masterpiece. The plot is fresh and fairly unconventional, releasing its pathway from the overused movie plot clone formulae of Hollywood (ugh). The characters are all very lifelike and are performed masterfully by the actors! The music is also well done. I never felt myself distracted by flamboyant themes, but instead was drawn in by the music which worked perfectly to enhance the action on screen. I can't wait to see future movies by this relatively new director, skilled writer, and these great new actors.

I recommend this movie whole-heartedly! Bravo Canada!

If you get the special edition of Cincinnati Kid you get to see Jay Ose perform a few effects and techniques, such as; Fingerprint Card Trick, Strike Seconds, False riffle shuffle (can't remember if it's a strip out or push thru), Hustler's False Triple Cut (written up in the Annotated Erdnase) etc. It's GREAT!

The poker scene in "The Sting" is good. It even has a short card slight routine.

It also has a deck switch.

And Jay Ose cheats in his cheating demonstration for the Cinncinati kid. He tries to pass off a double lift as a second deal. It's funny; watch it.

Is this the same special edition with commentary by Phil Gordon and Dave Foley from Celebrity Poker Showdown fame or a different one?

Thanks!

The God of Gamblers series includes pokergames, dice, mahjong, human superfuntion, magic, and even horse race , but its more like a comedy than serious gamblers' movie, especially the hunman superfuntion part included.
though it's still worth a try.
hope you'll enjoy it.

Hey whats up badboy... long time!! I got my whole GOG collection at pacific mall... its funny because I have god of the gamblers 1-2 and I also have god of the gamblers #3,4and5 all of which has nothing to do with each other and is more of a comedy than a gambling movie..

Alright I know they've all been said but I'll say it again darn it.

Shade taught me that to play cards you should know how to handle a deck first.

Cincinatti Kid taught me about "making the wrong move at the right time"; and

The Sting taught me to stay the hell away from a deck of cards when there is money, and alcohol around.

Did I listen to any of these lessons? I think not!
