Hi all. I have been thinking of what DVD series would be worth investing on. Some of the materials that I have that I consider "gems" are Giobbi Card College 1-3, AOA 1-3, Daryl Encyclopedia 1-8 (except 3). I have budgetted $200 for magic now and my attention was caught by Vernon Revelation 1-8 DVD. I really want to buy it but honestly, I am buying it only because it is a vernon material. I tried to do research in this forum and I am impressed although I get mixed interpretations as to whether it is an instructional DVD or good source of learning or "experiencing". Is it a good source of learning routines and techniques/sleights or is it more of a material on magic psychology and presentation the "vernon way"?
What I am truly waiting for is the True Astonishment by Paul Harris but I guess that will be for the 2nd half of the year. But for now, do you have any suggestions comments? Tnx so much for your inputs in advance. $200 is quite a big investment for me considering the exchange rates in my country. Hope you could help/advice. Magically yours, Pierre |

Pierre, There are hundreds of 'gems' still out there and I'm certain future posts in this thread will try and list them. The series you are considering is as worthwhile an acquisition as any other. To answer your question directly, you will find a balance of all you listed and I don't think you will be disappointed.
However, you will note I said acquisition and not investment. The reality is you will be investing in yourself. Considering your statement about the value of $200, would that be a good investment or is there something your dollars are better saved / spent on? That answer comes only from within you. |

I have revelations, and while I love it, I would not call it an instructional video per se, especially not like Daryl's Complete Encyclopedia DVD set is instructional. There is a lot of discussion between Dai, Michal Ammar, Gary Ouellet and Steve Freeman over various tricks and events from Dai's career. Dai sometimes does show a move or do the move himself, sometimes Michael, Steve, or Gary does it, and not necessarily exactly as Dai did it, but their own variation. It is more like a few evenings of sitting around the living room with Dai, and reminescing with a few demos and discussions. You get to certainly see some of Dai's style, some good advice, you get to see him slap Michael's hands and say "there is no good reason for that move" which was pretty common if you were getting instruction from Dai. It is certainly a reference work, and a look at Dai in his last years, but there isn't a lot of logical order to the set. It just sort of comes, in the middle of Dai performing something, he might break out and tell you how he got the name professor, etc. If you are looking for hard instuction, this isn't the series. If you are looking at a good historical look at the career of Dai, a few good pieces of advise, and a look at the professor in his last days, then it is a great dvd series.

Do you think Marlo Cardician/Legend can be a good alternative? might just wait for Paul Harris' True Astonishment. But in the meantime, thinking of marlo dvd...

My advice, don't spend all of the $200 at once, buy one DVD work with it until you can do the material before going on to the next.
Depending on how new, or experienced with magic you are will dictate what is the best DVDs to get. Also think about what magic you like to do. DVDs are like tricks, there will be a few you use all the time, and the remainder is in a drawer. Buy quality over quantity...

Pierre888,
I have both the Revelations set and the Marlo Cardician set. I like them both very much. Especially the Vernon sets. I have watched each of the DVD's multiple times. I think any magician would benefit from the set, but it I agree with Photis. It's not really set up to teach tricks and certainly not full routines. That said, I really love that set of DVD's. The Marlo set is kind of the same way. The first DVD is history and historical footage of Marlo performing. The second DVD is effects shown and taught by students of Marlo. It is good, but it might not be exactly what you are looking for. Both sets are top notch in my book. And I would NEVER part with the Vernon sets under any circumstances. But if you are looking for straight instruction, these really aren't the sets. Have you considered the Bill Malone sets? They are great. The 4 DVD set contains many great tricks and good instruction.
