I've never worried about being taped. I find it much less intrusive than flash photography (but then half my show is juggling related so spots in front of my eyes is a problem). In the past if something has happened in the show which I have wanted to remember but couldn't (an off the cuff remark that got a good laugh perhaps) I've phoned up the parents to see if anyone has taped the show.
About half of my publicity photos come from people taking photos of my show and e-mailing them to me. I can see in the future that video clips of my show may occur the same way (when the quality of picture and video-er is good enough). Why am I not using professional photographers as much? Because they aren't there when that particular occasion occurs. Nigel

Nicholas - so if they don't get it, there's just nothing for it - they're paying me a ridiculous amount for (what they perceive as) an hour of my time, I can't get too forceful about it. Hey, this isn't a matter of national security secrets, and for the most part what they're taping is not me - it's the (sitting with his friends in the front row) birthday kid's face.

I prefer to switch in a different routine if need be if the parent won't move. I know of only two rules of magic 1) Practice 2) Never reveal the secret. |

Magicians are allowed to be surly when their magical space is invaded, and I am so when some fool with a camera gets in my face or butt, and this even garners more respect from the audience because you are in control of the space (as a magician should be). If they want to film, they are not allowed to interrupt the flow and pacing of my show, or to distract in any way. And I can't stand when a mother starts giving out snacks to the kids while I am in the midst of a routine, this is live theatre, not a !@#$%^&! TV show or movie! I will not allow the quality of my performance to be sacrificed by these intruding nitwits!

I don't like to videotaped. It's in my contract that I don't allow it, but people do it anyway sometimes. I don't make a big fuss then.
I do a lot of steals and manipulation type stuff that could be detected of watched a few times. |

I allow them to video tape as well because it afterall they are paying for me to be there and it is my goal to meet their needs. I also have my logo and name on a sign that goes onto my Lefler Roll on table. If anyone takes a video or a picture during any performance, it is as if they are doing me a favor through free advertising. Anytime they show the photo or show the video tape, my name is there for them to see and remember.

A question for those of you who encourage photography/filming of their child while they are helping you, do you do anything that will make for a great photograph? Just a picture of them waving the wand is a bit boring. So, I make sure that every effect has a "Kodak moment". My opening and closing effects has the best, and these I reserve for the birthday child. After all, give them a nice memorable moment, and they are more likely to book you to come back.
In my opening effect, I dress the child up as a wizard (be they a boy or girl), and euse a nest of wands so they are so loaded up with wands, it is quite comical. And at the end, when they produce a giant silk, it is also a good posing point. My closing effect is generally the comedy water in cup on head routine, which looks inherently silly, and the having the birthday child sat on the stool looking like a pump makes for a great photograph. I should add, that if I suspect the birthday child would not want to sit on the stool and have a cup of water on their head, I use their older brother/sister/cousin, or maybe one of their parents. I still use the birthday child, but get them to do the pumping of the arm instead

I think allowing my clients to videotape me makes for good marketing. I agree with the others that kids would much rather have a live performer come back than watch little Billy's video tape of last years show on the TV.
I've been fortunate that most clients actually ask me if it's ok, even at libraries the librarians will ask me if it's ok with me before they allow a parent to videotape my show. Schools like to tape me too, and they still ask me back for the next year...so what can I say? They're paying my bills and feeding my kids after all..... Chris |

Infact I go as far as to even TELKL the parent when a Kodak moment is about to occur by placing the comedy bit into the routine. Anytime their child is up there and I know the perfect time for a picture, I will stop and say, "Oh wait Kodak Momemt Time." I then get out a clapperboard as you see in making films. I then say., "Awesome photo shot, take 1" It gets a huge laugh and we get to pose and it is a que for the parent and anyone else to take a photo. Of course on the clapperboard also has my name on it. So once again there is the chance of that photo getting past around with my name on it if anyone is intersted. It also is funny, cause it is part of a routine.

I do not allow parent video taping.
I bring my personal videographer to every event and I tell the parents there is no need to video tape the event as they will receive a professional copy WITH the childs name on the title screen. This allows me to edit moments I may not want on the final copy. I also can use the footage for marketing purposes. Also, if other parents want a copy of their kid who assisted they can also get a copy. But as a professional, I like to control the surroundings and my video guy knows where to be not to intrude on the performance. |

Since my tricks all come from Hank Lee or a similar source, it's unlikely someone will view the tape of me and "steal" my trick by buying it at the same place I bought it from. Try slowing down Vernon doing his cup and ball routine. You still don't see the load itself until he reveals it from under the cup.
I like doing small birthday parties as a side line hobby. If someone wants to tape me, I don't see it as a big deal. But as soon as I eclipse DC or Lance Burton, then I'll get more fussy about being taped.

I don't mind at all when I perform at birthday parties. Also, parents want to take photos of their child when they are voluntering. These things are to be expected. Afterall, its not everyday that they get to see a magician and so they want to record the event. Its just not an issue for me.

Its funny to see these old posts coming back again and again. this post was originaly posted in 2002, then revisited in 2005 and now again in 2010. However with that said I have no problem with them video taping me.

If they want to tape, they can. It makes no difference to me.
I suspect most people don't watch their tapes very often anyway. And if they do, well then I guess they'll remember me! |

I don't mind as long as I can get a testimonial video after the show from the parent.

I suppose you could explain that they can't video tape because you are currently in the Witness Protection Program.
But I allow it all the time. It's for their use. What's the big deal? David

I allow photoshuts, but no video taping. This is written in the contract, remembered to the organisation who hired me and is announced prior the beginning of the show. I tell the organisator that he has to deal with people taping me during the show to get it stopped otherwise I'll stop the show.
I case I see someone videotaping me during the show I'll get easy over it, announcing that I would like to get a copy, but state afterwards that I was joking and remember him or her that this isn't allowed. Usually the organisator will walk over to get it stopped. If this is not the case, I'll go over and explain it to the person in a firmly manner; specially the law of "protection and rights of your image". Until now I never had to do this. Kyle, I like your idea with the clap very much. David, to me the deal is that I don't want to find my full show or parts of it filmed from bad angles on the internet without my permission. When you are filming you're in control of everything : lighting, angle, cuts, edits, quality etc. If they are filming, and usually they know in advance that this is not allowed, they'll hide the camera, ipod etc so they won't get caught right away. They're filming from a bad angle, not to disturb all the others watching, the quality is quite bad etc... I mean, even though we are not David Copperfields or ... "put you're favorite internationally known magician in here"... If they don't let it do, why should we ? Just my thoughts on it. Oliver. |

I allow limited videotaping at birthday parties, which means when the birthday child comes up to help me several times during the show videotaping is allowed. After that, they can take all the still pictures they want.
I have found that this method appears reasonable to 99.9% of the parents, and it also seems to quench their desire to have some of the show captured as a memory item for their children in later years. Gerry |
