I would be fine with it. It's not like a "normal" person is going to figure out your effects by watching the video at normal speed (and from a head on view). Parents with videocameras just LOVE to tape their kids, so why not let them.
On the other hand, you have different fingers.

David Copperfield and every big name magician who has ever performed on television has consented (by default) to being video-taped by potentially millions of TV viewers with VCRs, and I don't believed any have suffered from it.
Video taping and photography is prohibited at every indoor Public entertainment venue that I have ever attended. It done is more for audience control than any fear of reproduction, or stealing secrets. A birthday party that is in someone's home is private event, and I think it would be innapropriate to dictate what a person may not do in their own home, especially when they are paying me.

My opinion on this is that if parents want to film it then that is OK. This is because they are trying to film their children and the other children at the party - not the magic show specifically.
If people do decide to get a camera, I usually suggest that they stand to the side of me and face the direction I am facing. This allows them to get more of the children (and less of me performing ) What are your views on this idea? Robert Temple |

Let them tape. They might show it to a friend and I might end up with another booking!! Just be sure to get my good side!!

My response is usualy:
"Well normaly I do not let anyone to tape my show, but.... sure go ahead. No problem." But that is mainly for Birthday parties. For larger shows no. |

I always let them video. I do ask that they stay in front of me if they are going to tape. In fact, I had an instance where a dad was moving around during my kids show with a camcorder and I knew that my next routine was a little angly, so I just asked him to not get to far to the side for the next routine. He complied and it wasn't a problem.
Definitely a nerd, in science, technology, and magic.

"Hello and welcome to the Theatre Under The Trees here at Parc Safari. In a few moments the incredible illusions John and Jane Martin will make their appearance. Before we begin we would like to remind you that the use of flash photography and video taping are strictly..............encouraged. And we ask that while you are sitting you remain seated at all times. And now please....etc"
This is the intro we used all summer at a them park. I let anyone who wants to video the show. It's great publicity and FREE. I'm not worried about others stealing material, because they could do that with a pen and note book as well!!! |

I ask that parents not tape my act as a standard theatrical practice, but I encourge them to take photos and video tape the childrens reactions and small portions of the show involving the kids..just not whole routines. One reason for this is that I find the video image diminishes the performance...that not only does a a tape fail to carry the spirit or experience of the magic...a bad taping makes in look less impressive. It also spoils the after affect of imagination and memory of what happened (it the case of the actual routine). On the other hand focus on reactions only builds this.

I find bilwonder's comments very interesting. I have never had a problem with being videotaped. I even have a couple clips of performances on my website. But, my two sons have both attended a Waldorf school, and at their school they ask that parents not videotape the many student performances for the very reasons that bilwonder mentions. The children have an image of themselves and their performance. When they see it replayed on video they see mistakes they didn't notice or had forgotten, it can affect their self-image.
As a performer, video can be a valuable development tool. But, if I could choose, I would prefer that people had only the image of me |

Hi,
This might well no longer be an issue in the UK as the Goverment is considering bringing in new legistation that no videoing or photographs be allowed of children unless the person has permision of every parent of every child! Phillip |

I encourage parents to videotape my birthday parties. At least 30% of my birthday gigs come from referrals who have seen my drawing board routine (Axtell board) on tape.

I feel comfortable the way I perform. So I don't mind being video taped. If they are trying to tape behind me, I tell them it is better if they get in front of me because it would look beter for the viewers. Before I had my own camcorders, I use to call back the patron reqesting a taping of the video.

Let them tape all they want.
they will never have this moment again and besides it's for their private use anyway.

I want them to tape the show. It is something they will have forever, and we all know how many times kids will watch these things. It is a memory we created for the family.

I just worry about them running the tape slow motion to see my vanishing cane changing into a silk streamer. Sometimes I say "Only film when a child is assisting" (especially the birthday kid), other times I don't care, just film away! I must be on a thousand home movies by now, I hope they didn't catch me picking my nose too many times. And why is it that it is 99% of the time the dads who are obsessed with these camcorders? Is it some kind of phallic replacement? To be honest, they sometimes drive me crazy! Just today I was doing a Communion show, and there was a guy videotaping who told the boy who was assisting me to turn around and face the camera, in the middle of my routine! Grrrr! There is nothing that gets me angrier than when some dork with a camera interrupts the flow of my routine! I think I may have to become a Sean Penn with these magic show paparazzi.

I don't mind them taping me BUT what about when they want to tape the kids. Does anyone else have problems with parents who try and film from the back of the stage, getting in your way and potential revealing effects like the axtell board to all who watch the tape?

I have not ran into the problem of backstage video taping yet Nicholas, but I would not allow that myself. I do not like the idea of the kids being taped. Unless, of course they are a helper in the show.

Would you stop the show and get them off the stage?
I don't want to appear rude (particularly on tape) |

Nicholas - It happens to me, and by the time I notice it any "exposure" has already happened - but I might very well say "you might get a better view from over there" and at least try to move them to the side where I could compensate for their angle - or even say "Let me ask you to over there if you would; magic isn't nearly so magical if you're behind me - we magicians have to keep our secrets, you know!"

So its cool to ask them not to stand there?
I sometimes make a joke of it but they don't always get the hidden meaning. i.e. MOVE! |
