I posted this in the "Boxes, tubes, and bags" section; however, I figured I might get some good insight in here as well...
I am in the midst of writing a show to perform with a good friend. We are taking our two unique styles of magic (he is into bizzare, dark, mystical, etc. My style is parlor with aspirations of glitz and glamour large illusions...). We are taking our talents and multiplying them times 10! With that, we each have a sub-character that almost mimics the style of performance we normally present; however, our styles become magnified. It is almost a spoof on ourselves. Anyway, my counter- character is "Sparkle McDazzle"! He is the glitz & glamour, bright lights, and sequined (sp?) jacket- toting magician... Much like Gob from Arrested Development for those of you who are fans of that show. I am trying to come up with a short list of tricks/illusionettes that I can adapt to this character. I've already thought about a standard sized Square Circle that is hidiously colored... Like a sparkling gold circle and a glossy-red square with dragons spray painted on the sides! My table I'll work off of will have the hideous table cloth with the frills... does this paint a picture for you or what? Any other ideas? Be creative! Bryan "Sparkle McDazzle" Gilles |

Haha that's a great idea.
In the square circle you could pack the objects inside with a ton of glitter. If you do a silk fountain, same idea. If you want to make a joke out of it you could cough and hack at it. Be careful when you work with a new parter.. listen to each other carefully and don't let one get a big head. I'm sure you know, but I've had a very bad experience as some on here know. Take care. Do not sparypaint dragons or anything else! Go to a specialist who has a cutter machine and have them precisely cut in luminous holographic adhesive contact paper. You will get the shiniest glitziest props ever! Don't forget to sew billions of sequins on all your cloths that you use to cover illusions.

Bryan,
With a name like "Sparkle McDazzle", your character will need to be REALLY over the top! I'm wondering in what type of venue you plan to present the show and who your intended audience is. I can think of places where it would likely go over big, and some where it wouldn't go at all. "Camp" works with some audiences, not for others.

A lot of great ideas guys!!!
Posted: Feb 12, 2006 10:16am AlmostAmazingJames- you are right...I do mean "figuratively". I don't want to mess with sweeping up glitter after each show. I do want the illusionettes to be gaudy in appearance on purpose! My side-kick/partner-in-crime in this act will have an over-dramatic approach to a mystical or mysteriously-dark bizzare magician (kind of like Max Maven multiplied by 10!!!) Hope that paints a bigger picture... Bryan |

If you really want to poke fun at the "style" of Vegas (like my friend does in his club act), be sure to mention how you got the "snazzy" clothes. He does a bit that goes something like this: "So, you like the jacket? I got this old thing years ago... at Liberace's garage sale.... it came with matching socks... 3 of them." (He tug on his beltloops and hikes up his pants a bit... usually they catch on in a beat or two, when the same silver glittered socks show on his ankles, they understand where the third sock must be). He then says: "I also got a pair of matching cufflinks thrown in but I didn't wear them... I thought that would be overkill." lol A bit risque, but it plays well in a regulatory kinda way without be down-right crude. Not magic, but a good time waster while a volunteer is bending (shuffling) some cards or examining a boa (feather kind, not snake) for the old "cut and restored" boa trick. lol Nothing says VEGAS like an elaborate "showgirl boa"! lol
