Oh no. Can we stop this show from going any further NOW?!
I'm not just a magician, I'm an interpreter of Reality.

I know, it would be nice to stop it early before the damage is done.

Well using a sure fire method, even presidents have been stopped - permanently.

But nope, can't think of anything off hand at the moment.

I am also very weary of the unending stream of the morons and clueless who have the urge to prance their ineptness and lack of brain cells across the tv screen...a never ending river of embarassing human dildos intent on showing the world what they have to offer which amounts to buckets of stupidity and a total lack of awareness as to anything beyond their own nose. For me anyway, it stopped being entertaining when the Gong Show was in it's 3rd week and Jerry Springer tapped into the botomless pit of American low life trash and AI finds plenty of...Enough is enough.

If they do it as a straight Talent Show there might be some interest...but they wont and if Cowl is involved it will look for the lowest denominator to exploit...sadly there will be plenty of dregs to parade for the cameras...uproarious laughter will ensue. Not.

I think Doug is right. What scares me is the inevitable hordes of endless goofballs trying to grab their 15 minutes of fame who will take a good or great effect and perform it with such ineptness that it could potentially expose the secret methods used and therefore ruin it for all of us. I am no professional but there is NO way I would perform a trick for anyone in a public setting, not to mention on live TV with millions of people watching, unless I was 100% confident I could do it with finesse and that it would not expose any secrets.

I think the image I have in my head is of this being like a national broadcast of a contest at a magic convention. And that's a BAD thing. One good act for every twelve that suck, and LOTS of zombies and dancing canes. Barf.

But, then, Last Comic Standing was pretty tasteful.

This March, Simon Premeirs "American Inventor." This is a prequel to "American Magician" Imagine the inventors that "suck", you can bet there will be magicians who just want to get on TV, even if the are really bad.

For every good magician there will be hundreds of bad ones! We will be screaming for the return of the "masked magician"

Bad example. LAST COMIC STANDING was fixed. The 'top three comics' were all managed by one of the show's producers.

If this magic show comes about they'll shoot a pilot and test it in the malls over in the valley. If 18 to 26 year olds are into it, it will air while the self appointed arbitrators of what is to be allowed in magic will have to silently gnash their teeth. Given the relatively anemic numbers shows like MIND FREAK pull (although personally I enjoy the program)I would be suprised to see this show A) make it to air or B) Have much of an impact.

Then again, what do I know: I still can't understand why they cancelled ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT.

Anything with or by Simon Cowell scares the bageeeeezuz out of me. He might of known his business when it came to the singers but magic and vegas style acts? We'll have to see. It is his money, his show, and his contracts up for grabs. I guess he can do whatever he likes with it.

It's Saturday evening and tonight I'm popping in my newly received DVD copy of THE BEST OF THE GONG SHOW with Chuck Barris. Loads and loads of classic Acts on a favorite TV past time. Good quality nonsense.

Ugh...I forgot the beer and pork rinds. Back to the store now.

Granted...

but it was a good example of the point I was making...that the comics were seen as 'wannabees' even though they were 'workers'.

Interesting.I never considered the people on the TV show as 'wannabees', but rather as people looking for exposure. Your point is well taken.

By the same token, is a kid doing a card trick at an open mike night just a 'wannabbe', and how many magic acts out there are just the magi's equivalent of a cover band; that is, doing someone else's songs with an occasional personal touch here and there.

Here in Boston, when Gulman plays the comedy connection he is billed as the winner of Last Comic Standing, and it is his only selling point. Renee pitches him for media as 'the guy that won', ditto for the runners up. Granted, places like the comedy connection feature famous over funny, but Gulman is actually pretty good.

By the way, Dark Museum looks pretty cool, but I digress.

When is it going to air? And is it for sure going to happen? Is anyone actually auditioning? This is going to be interesting. I just hope it doesn't do anything bad to magic.

If you are seriously considering audition, to prevent you from looking foolishly, unless that is your goal, consider rating your routine to the following criteria:

If you can get all "fours", then you might have a chance.

I wonder how this thing will go. If it goes through we must convince them not to put exposures on the TV. Most likely though the exposures will be 1 dollar tricks. Nothing big enough to effect us.Hopefully.

It sounds like many of you are worried about this show because you know there will be lots of crappy magicians shown on TV. So, your problem is not with the show, but with your peers. I think many people in the world of magic NEED to hear from entertainment industry judges (Simon, or whoever) that "the boring silk trick, or the boring card trick ain't gonna cut it." Wow, think of it... hundreds of magicians trying to impress some judges that will tell them the truth. I think it's a pretty good idea.

I can understand the fear of exposure on the show. This could be a problem. But we can't assume that yet. It is very early in the shows development. We are all reading the same press release right? I don't know too much about the format... other than "American Idol like." Plus, this is not going to be a masked magician type show, where secrets are explained. If secrets are exposed, it will be because of some inexperienced magician screwing up... then hopefully seconds later on the show, they will show some great magicians at their best. The lay public is smart enough to seperate the two.

Plus, keep in mind, Kelly Clarkson just won a Grammy or two. Which proves, talent, luck, and inteligence can take you a long way... Simon may have discovered her, and may be producing her, but she is working her ass off to stay at the top. The one magician who wins this contest, could and should have a career for years to come.

Keep in mind, Simon is saying he "wants to find the next S and R" which means, the people who make it past round one, and gonna have it all, talent, passion, and most importantly personality. The bad magicians will be forgotten after the first episode airs... then, the public latches on, and roots for their favorite. Also, this is not going to have the same popularity as "Idol"... so even if the show totally sucks, only thousands will be watching, not millions. Magic isn't hip enough... but then again, maybe Simon can help.

Magic is Magic because you don't see it everyday everywhere. I do not look forward to magic on TV all the time.

I would LOVE to audition. I think I would WIN easily! If I get my demands...

YAh, I am too cocky. HATE me........he. Smile

So all that aside you guys realize why people watch American Idol the first episodes the MOST?YAH,I KNOW THAT IS ALL I WATCH. With Simon on it I can only speculate*keyword*THE HORRIBLE PERFORMERS WILL be there.

You know what, we are weak and powerless.Whatever is going to occur, IS GOING TO OCCUR. We can't but wait for the future of magic helpless.

I might decide to audition. I have a lot to think about...............

The last comic analogy got me THINKING.

Just posted some thoughts about this in The LIVE! Wire http://robert.thedean.net

You can read it there, but to summarize - I think the show is a great idea and can do a ton for good magic and good magicians.

I think every single magician in the world should audition... Probably the ONLY time they will get an honest reaction and feedback to their magic... I think its a great idea..

Most magicians perform for their family and friends mostly and they always get the "wow that's amazing, you're amazing!!! you got skills!! what are you still doing here? I love you honey)

I think most magician would quit magic after being judged by Cowell.... hes too blunt and honest against our big magic ego's...and with all of us thinking like this:
