As you might expect, there are thirteen effects by Doc Shiels in Thirteen. If you have read any of Shiels before, you already know whether you are going to like this material. If you have never read him, search the Café and you will find that there are strong opinions both ways. I find him one of the most thought-provoking and imaginative creaters of magic in the bizarre genre, and I like this book too.
There are some new twists on mentalism, and some old magic tricks given a new flavor in Doc's hands. THE RED HANDED LEAGUE. The magician's medium discovers the murder weapon and the murderer, enacted while she was out of the room. This is confirmed by a bloody fingerprint test! CHROMAGIC. Good old chemical magic, harder to do these days! MANDRAGORA. A Mandragora root in an apotherary's bottle animates. Disturbing if done by the right person in the right setting! OUANGA. The magician marks a drawing of a voodoo doll in a particular spot with one of three different colored crayons, concealing the drawing. A participant does the same to a doll, and the magician is found to have predicted or guided the participant. BETE NOIR. The magician summons a cat spirit who manifests in the darkness. PANDEMONIUM. A really loud spirit manifests in a seance. Three of the effects are Tarot effects: a prediction, a discovery, and and odd spelling effect. That's a taste. Bill Palmer has written elsewhere at the Café that these are not pipe dreams, they all come from the effects that Doc Shiels performed. It takes a remarkable performer to pull off some of these things, but even if you don't do any of these exactly, you will find that Doc will help you see how to put old wine into new bottles to suit your style. Read some Doc Shiels, then sit down with Tarbell, and you can create your own creepy magic, tongue in cheek if that's your style. Yours, Paul |

If you're not familiar with Doc's writings you can check out an early lost article from him at http://www.TheShielsEffect.com/updates.htm and then click on the link for Puzzlers or Paranormalists
