I just had to know if you share secrets/routines/methods, etc. as another post here got me thinking. For me...
I only share routines I've read and that are available via any magic shop, but, I don't teach them just reference where they can be found. As for something that has been shown to me, I don't share that with anyone except the creator/person who showed it to me, and if I decide to perform it or not. Otherwise, I'm pretty tight lipped with my magic. |

I send out my findings and stories to a few people.
No interest in selling the stuff for now.

I share pretty much everything I do. I've submitted routines to online journals, print magazines, a book or two and have even given a lecture.
Most of my stuff is so geared to my performing style that few ever do the routines I release. Though I have been told by one of the former editors of MUM that my DaVinci Code card trick appeared to be performed several times as it was mentioned in the meeting write ups in the back of the magazine.

I have no secrets, my value as a magician is all style, and no one can do me quite as well as I can do me.

Only when they ask me how I did it.

Secrets have great value in our society. So much value, in fact, they could be considered our "money." Do I share my secrets? That's the same as asking me if I share my money. Let me ask you something instead, as a way of illustrating my point of view. Do you share your money with anyone? Would you just give your money away? What if it was just money that someone gave to you, like charity? What if you worked long and hard to earn it?
There is one person with whom I will share my secrets. This is a person I've known for 25 years, that shares my same value on secrets, and that I trust without doubt or reservation. We work together on our projects so that we can work the "kinks" out of them. He has complete familiarity with all of my work, and I with his. And that's not all. I haven't told him everything I know, nor do I doubt that he's told me same. We still surprise each other from time to time. And that's ok.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

I think Al said it best (I never thought I would say THAT ) but the real secret lies in being you.
Maybe the question should have been Do you share routines? To that I say No for the same reason Al said - No one does Me like Me.

That is a tough question. There was a person I worked with when I was younger that helped me with an act I was putting together. He helped me as well as showed me how to do some things. He was my mentor and friend and helped me greatly to put together a great act. In a case like this I think sharing "The Secret" is ok because they are helping you to produce a great act. If someone just asks me,"how did you do that" I usually just say "it was magic" and let it go. If I was trying to mentor a person in the art of magic The sharing the secret is part of the traning. I made a mistake here at the Café' just recently by asking how something was done. I was reprimanded by a staff memeber, but I knew at the time that I should not have asked the question in an open forum.
I think as magicians we sometimes forget how we got to be what we are today. We got there by asking questions and seeking help. There are many slights that I do not know how to do but if I asked someone here to show me,in the right way,I am sure or at least I hope, they would help me. Direct me to a book or a dvd or whatever to see how it is done and then help me to perfect the move. I have done some effects for years and my family still does not know how I do them because that is an area where the sharing might not be the best thing to do. They just want to know how it is done, they don't want to put it in an act. People will ask "how did you do that" for ever, it is just part of our nature. Most people don't want to be fooled or tricked, and I try never to do that instead I try to entertain them instead. My 2cents Steven |

Thanks Neale
I will admit all of my tricks have evolved as my stage character has developed, so I feel I own every trick I do, and I would not like to see someone trying to do me, especially if his me is better than my me. I would hate that. Al Angello

No takers so far. No problem. d*** scoundrels. |

No Randy
I was not there I live in Philadelphia. It was at the magic Café under "relocation advise" a magician was moving to California from England and asking for some advise, when you and I disagreed I said "some ornery cowpokes don't take kindly to strangers around these parts" It was my Gabby Hayes immitation (if you are old enough to remember Roy Rogers toothless side kick Gabby). "Sharing Secrets"
Is this an oxymoron? I only have two magical secrets and I've held one of them dear for over 14 years. One is from Roger Klause and the other is from John Calvert. They both asked me not to "share" them. I'm not smart enough to have a secret original and exclusive to myself, that would be the only circumstance in which I'd be comfortable "Sharing"..... then I suppose it would no longer be a secret Information contained in books, videos and lectures could loosely be called secrets but we all know how "secret" that info stays. PROTOCOLS OF THE ELDERS OF MAGIC is a perfect example - The publisher and author asked that the secret not be shared with those who didn't purchase a copy of the book. That was honored for about 15 minutes after the first copies were received. Some folks "shared" because they were disappointed with the content of the book, or thought the content was stupid or felt like they got "ripped" off (These being the folks who gladly sold the "worthless" book for more than twice the cover price by the way) Another type is the person who "shares" just to be a jerk or show everyone how smart he is by "sharing" secrets given to him in confidence. Most of the folks who've responded on this topic thus far are those who are original in their thinking and qualified to give away a few secrets. I'm not and therefore don't think I'd be comfortable "sharing". Dave |

For starters don't neglect to use (possibly with a few adjustments) in CA what's worked for you in England and then some. I just jumped in here to remind you that for those of us in Texas and surrounding area, California is NOT a state of this country. It is a planet. A planet and it's inhabitants that is very different from the rest of the world in it's manner of being." Being from another planet myself, I'm actually very respectful and receiving of foreigners to this great country owned by none of us. |
