Mark Wilson, on local TV in Houston, Texas, around 1960, doing the Ball & Vase.
7-11 gave away "The Trick Of The Week" as part of the promotion for Mark's show. My dad took me to get one and it went on from there. It really took off when I was entering the 7th grade and was in the school library during summer school and saw a kid reading a book on magic. I loitered around until he put it back on the shelf. I grabbed it and started a life-long interest in the art. My adult influences came from visiting the Magic Castle in the mid-seventies, watching a younger, longer-haired Ricky Jay, playing with his wind-up toys. |

A very patient dealer named Andy Dallas at Dallas & Co. in Champaign, IL in 1974.
I told him I could never do that stuff where the magic happens right before their eyes, and he said "Sure, you can. Try this!" He started me on a TT & silk. Then Eugene Burger came down from Chicago for visits, and Paul Harris books started arriving and I saw a light. Still one of the best magic shops in the country. |

When I was 8 years old, I saw Doug Henning on a tv special and he suspended a girl on little fountains of water, I remember saying out loud, "That's what I wanna do!" I'll be the big 5-0 this year, so it's been a wonderful life seeing magic develope through the years. I currently do Table-hopping in a few of the areas restaurants and truely love close-up, especially with kids as I do kid nights. My weekends are for other show types when they come up.
I've learned that presentation is everything. I use objects that people recognise and can handle before, after and sometime during the routines and this puts them more at ease. God has truely filled my life by allowing me to have the passion, desire, patience and time to learn and preform, what is in my veiw, The greatest job in the world. It IS a long road to get to be a working professional magician, the hardest thing that you'll ever love. Magically, Joseph |

BTW for those who think that you can't possibly do close-up. The hardest thing to do is walk up to strangers and talk to them, let alone make them feel comfortable. Also people have a fear of failure or rejection which keeps them from persuing their dreams. Learn say 10 effects so that you could do them in your sleep, I mean so that you're almost sick of it, then do it another week. Now your ready to work on your presentation and interaction with confidence that everyone will have fun. I have had no public speaking, no acting lessons......but the drive to preform over ride the fear. You have to want it BAD.......take a deep breath and head to the first table. Do about 3 effects the thank them. Regroup somewhere. If those effects worked well, go to the other side of the restaurant and try the same ones, then mix em when you feel the urge.
I agree TT an silks are wonderful, sponge balls that match one of the silks color can be interesting as a spec can take an invisible piece of color from the silk, place it in your hand, and as you rub the hands together the ball appears, makes a nice flow from silks to ball. Magically, Joseph |

Three things come to mind from when I was a youngster:-
-Paul Daniels magic show -Gerard Majax, Secrets of the Card Sharps (found it in the local library!) -Seeing a B&W clip of Vernon doing the Erdnase Colour Change (now the famous photo of him with cigarette in hand, looking down at the Ace) All had lasting impressions on me.

When I was maybe 9? I saw a David Blaine special. I don't care what you think about him, but when your 9 years old, he's incredible. About 3 years later, a guy at camp was doing magic, and I followed him for like a week trying to learn a trick and get information. When I got back home, II found a magic shop and started learning. A year and a half later from that, I'm writing how I got started with magic.

I go with the original post. My aunt gave me a gift card to a book store-I went in and, just for fun, bought a magic book that was in the hobby/game section. The book-Mark Wilson's Encyclopedia of Magic. I was hooked. I still carry that book to all my reading shows in schools, libraries, and daycares and tell the kids how I got into magic. I owe a lot to Mr. Wilson.
All these different stories are great! |

I was working as manager of a Bank in 1972. Ed Sparrow walked in to cash a check. He said that he was opening a magic shop nearby ( long since closed ). I visited the shop, walked out with Bobo's Coin Magic, and I was hooked.

I have played with all areas of magic at one time or another. But two individuals in particular peaked my interest in close-up, Harry Lorayne and Johnny Thompson. Watching these two masters do their thing peaked my interest. I realized there was a lot to close-up magic that I did not know and would benefit from learning. It is now my primary focus in magic.

Combination of Doug Henning, Uncle Bobby (local kid's TV show), and magic kit as a kid. I was really into it, then took up music.
Got back into it decades later to help me quit smoking. Instead of smoking, I began fidgeting with change, which led to a copy of Bobo's MCMfrom a bookstore, then a trip to the magic shop.
The current economic crisis is due to all the coins I've vanished.

I saw some specials on TV (World's Greatest Magic, etc...) and started practicing the things Mac King taught; then I did a web search on magic tricks, and learned a lot of simple card tricks, and found my way to Adams, spent an amount of money there. Then I figured out books were a better investment than nifty-sounding props.

I got the "Hat Full of Magic" set when I was about 5 years old. It came with a cool top hat that I had for years. Almost 27 years later I still have the "Tree of Diamonds" that came with the set.
