I've met Paul a few times and he comes across as a very amiable guy. Gets very passionate about his card ideas though. Last time I saw him he was really enthusiatic about something that didn't do much for me at all.
Anyway, for those with "Protean Card Magic" this is a twist on "Diamonds are Forever" I came up with two minutes after reading it to elimate the displacement of the force card (yuk, I thought it unneccessary). First, substitute the suit for clubs! Once the card has been selected (2,6 or 10) replace it and assemble the deck, false shuffle then spell directly to it! Cards are dealt to the table, last letter snapped and turned over onto the deck. After a pause, flip it face down onto the DECK. Use a corny line like, "That was a magic spell, here's another..." Spell out CLUB, one card for each letter then table the deck, turn over the four cards to show all four are clubs. "But this is simply magic". Wave these cards over the initilly dealt cards then turn them and spread to show they are all clubs too. Should I include that in MY next book? Maybe not. Have I used it? No. If I'm going to have that many cards stacked on top of the deck I'd probably be doing something else. Paul. |

Just a note on the description of moves within routines. If the moves are from standard texts then there should be no reason to describe them. By standard texts I mean Card Manipulations/More Card Manipulations, Expert at the card table, Royal road, Expert card technique, the Vernon card trilogy. etc

Anyway, I can assure you the sleights that he doesn't explain can't be found in those anyway. If some authors will explain everything, why can't he as well? One of his routines quotes 2 of his own books, and his "video" for information on sleights.... no no no! His books and videos are just about as far from standard texts as you will ever get. From my experience with this book, there is absoloutely no way I will ever consider purchasing any other stuff written by him.

The problem is that newcomers don't start with basic/classic texts anymore. They see the thousands of books hyped to the hilt and just dive in anywhere. There is no natural progression for many.
However, if buying a book one should be able to do what is in it. Perhaps a section at the back with basic descriptions of very well known moves mentioned in the text would be a compromise. But we are going off topic here. Anyone try out my "club" version of the Paul Gordon trick? Paul. |

I have used a Frank Garcia idea in one of my books in the past--I put in a notice on the inner front cover that the book was not intended for beginners and that basic sleights would not be explained. In my later books, I just went ahead and described all the sleights, albeit briefly in many cases.

Hi, I have to admit that I was like this too! I never met another magician until I was about 19 - 20 and started magic at 8 so I simply had no idea what was a classic and what was not. To be honest, by the time I got around to buying classics I missed what was classic about them. I am not overly fond of slieght books like Card College/Royal road I know enough sleights already. Yeah, but when you were a youngster it was still before the magic book floodgates opened to the thousands of magic books that more or less promise to make us all superstars!

On the whole there are better ways to spend your money than on Mr. Gordon's books. Nothing original or noteworthy.

I know that this is a years-ago thread, and nobody will read this, but it will make me feel better to stress that all magicians should listen to Joe M. Turner and Talisman, because - they really know what the h*** they're talking about. Really. We need excellent "reviewers" like them. HARRY LORAYNE.

Whoa, whoa, whoa...
Hold up...Hee Haw...Whoa (Mel Brooks). When did it become a bad thing to try and "model" one of the most prolific and successful magic writers of the past 50 or so years? It is true that Paul Gordon's writing style is Lorayne-esque. He doesn't make any bones about this. Again, how is this a bad thing? I saw Paul work and lecture at a Tannen's Jubilee many years ago. He had the crowd eating out of his hand, and was one of the conventions highlights. Some of you people need to seriously lighten up! L. Zaslow

Dear Snushy: Thanks for the kind words! Goodness me...Tannen's was 10 years ago. Good memory... Yes, I recall a great response at the lecture, close-up show and round robin (organised by Eric DeCamps); despite my TERRIBLE jet-lag! 36 hour NON-STOP trip. No break. Straight on stage! Paul Gordon

No problem, Paul:
Wow, was that really 10 years ago? It was up at Kutcher's Country Club in the Catskills. I miss those conventions, and Tannen's new ownership seems to have replaced the Jubilee with a steady stream of lectures at the shop. Not sure I agree with the trade-off! Again, if memory serves, your countryman, Michael Vincent, was at the same convention. It sure was fun, and your jet-lag didn't show! Cheers, Larry Zaslow

Dear Larry,
Yes TEN years! Yes...came with Michael & Alan Alan. Big memory is getting chased around foyer at 3am (light sleeper) by a hog! And, on FRONT ROW - Howie Schwarzman, Harry Lorayne, Ken Krenzel. Nervy moment! First time in USA lecturing...Glad jet-lag didn't show! But - I was ILL for the whole week! Met a YOUNG Joshua Jay there... Lots of GREAT memories... |

It's all coming back to me now.
I brought my parents to that convention, and when my father met Harry Lorayne, (roughly the same age, and native New York Jews), they started conversing in Yiddish. Harry put me on the spot by asking me to perform the Ultra Move, and fortunately I could do it! Phew! Any plans to lecture in the US? Best, Larry

Oh, and I also remember a very young Josh Jay performing at that convention.
He closed with his whimsical "Card in TV Remote." Charming!

Nice memories of yours! Well, I've lectured about 4 times in USA since. I think, 1998, 2000, 2001 & 2006 - total, about 20 lectures. Most on East Coast & Texas. All great...BEST was at Ray Goulet's.
I, too, can do The Ultra Move. It was one of those "must try and impress the boys" moves I learnt in the late 1970's! Remember meeting Martin Joyal (showed him my diary trick), sat with Bob (and Happy) Elliott and the late Bob Macallister...NICE folks. And, Eric DeCamps was SUPERB.... |

Suddenly, I'm starting to feel old!
Harry Lorayne had a knockout lecture recently at Fantasma Magic in Manhattan. If you come back to the States, it's a nice venue for lectures. Hope to see you sometime in the future. All the best, Larry

I've got all of Paul's books too. Ironically I'm only performing two effects that don't feature in his hard backs. Eight of Diamonds and Muldoon Match - the latter being probably the best value for money purchase I have ever made!
