I have seen many magicians (such as Joseph Gabriel, Greg Frewin , Puck , The Hamners ,and Dave Womach) produce a parrot and toss it out over the crowd, Then fly back to them.
I own an umbrella cockatoo that I produce at the end of my dove act and was hoping to toss him out over the crowd. Does anyone know the training technique to teach your parrot to do this? Or is there any books or videos on this subject? |

This has always been a closely guarded secret for magicians who use the big birds. As always everyone has their own method and may differ from the others. Joseph was the first magician to really use the big birds and toss them...so its kind of his thing, its just that many magicians emulated him and the history of it kind of got lost. I'd maybe email Joseph for permission first.

I don't know that this is a closely guarded secret other than most people won't put the time and effort into training an animal.
I started by having my bird hop to my hand on command. I kept increasing the distance until he had to fly. Always with positive re-enforcement (read: treats). I found a hall willing to let me conduct training and started him from my wrist, tossed him out and called to a return. Lots and lots of training. Would I ever let the bird free-fly outdoors? No. Hope it helps.
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.

John Shyrock in Tucson, AZ has a proven method of training doves--it probably will work with the larger birds, too. A fast web search or a note to Williams Magic Shop in Tucson would locate him...

I don't think the fact Joseph invented the throwing birds should be thought of as a "permission-only" idea. What about the different arts of magic? such as using doves, rabbits out of a hat? No one asks (has asked) permission to use doves to the "inventer" of using birds in a show.
If this Joseph guy were ever to sue a magician for throwing a cockatoo over an audience...that's one thing I would not want to miss. Ultimately its YOUR bird, and YOUR show. Birds are meant to fly, magicians are meant to impress, put the 2 together and toss that bird over heads! |

Ok well maybe I'm out of my element by suggesting to do something that -in my opinion- would be considered thoughtful and professional by contacting this Joseph guy...who by the way is JOSEPH GABRIEL (only like the top dove magician in the world and the guy who's pretty much responsible for making the invisible dove harness as popular as it is today) and asking him if you can do it.
Here's an example of what I mean...its a fun story so get out your blankets and teddy bears... when I started brainstorming on doing a color changing dove I knew James Ceilen was like the first guy to do it and the guy who's really known for it. Although my methods were different than his and my presentation was totally different from his I still went out of my way to contact him and ask permission to do it. Could I have gone off and done it anyways...yes most likely, but its the good karma and professionalism that will be remembered if Neil were to go out of his way to ask the main man responsible for making it as popular with magicians as it is today. But after working next to Joseph for three weeks every day in Vegas maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

OK sorry, I just read my post again and realized I may have sounded harsh and came to the conclusion that I wasn't harsh enough to get my point accross.
So here we go again... No, Gabriel didn't invent throwing parrots over the audience -bird trainers have been doing this forever. But he was the pied piper that so many of us followed after his first tonight show appearance when he nailed a double macaw production from an empty stage. If some of the younger magicians read more and seekd out more history of who did what maybe magic would be going in a better direction than where it is headed right now. So I for one give Neil major kudos for doing just that by researching and asking around before going off on his own and doing something. Good for you Neil. PS...you order is in the mail....

David Bilan nailed most of the "secrets" of how to do it. My position in this post is not to endorse you performing it, not discourage you from doing it... however, if you're going to do it, make sure that your bird really understands how to fly.
I was never able to successfully train my umbrella cockatoo to fly out over the audience. He wasn't taught how to fly young enough in life, and therefore it was very difficult to teach something that he should have learned within his first year of life... (He's about 15 now) This doesn't mean that it can't be done, but every bird is different. My brother and I have produced a series on parrot training, which is available at http://www.birdtricks.com If you go on there and study the methods we use, you will be able to apply the knowledge to how to get your parrot to "return flight". Whether or not you decide to contact Joseph (which I'd contact him if I were you), this should help. Good luck. Dave

Dear Dave Womach:
I do own your set of parrot training videos from birdtricks and I have been able to teach my cockatoo a lot of the tricks from the tapes. I also thought of ways I might try to get the bird to return fly by applying your methods. I posted the subject to see if there was any other methods that people knew of. My cockatoo is 2 years old and I've had him since he was 1. I will make sure I contact Joseph Gabriel before I ever perform the toss in the future out of respect for knowing he was the first to do the toss. I saw him in Vegas and the affect of the flyback is amazing. Thanks, Neil Croswell |

Neat! Something that mixes two of my loves. I have to agree with Mr. Womack, (even though I felt this was a shameless plug(not really Dave,)). If you are able to teach your 'too to fly back to you, I would invest in Mr. Womack's Dvd's. Also the one thing you want to check out may be a little insurance to cover the cost of a suit or dress in case of an accident.

My umbrella cockatoo and my Scarlett macaws fly over the audience every night here in Germany.
They have to be trained correctly and it's a long process. It can be dangerous, specially if you work in different places. I'm now sure 99 % but it was a long way ! ARNO http://www.arno-magie.com |

Arno, you have a GREAT SITE!!! - Very exciting stuff!!! You look to have your birds trained nicely...and the opening you have on the video is awesome with the fire up the pole. What is that, by the way....anyhow....
