Hello, I am wondering if anybody could suggest a good resource for the effect of being tied up with a rope and then just walking forward in which it appears as if the rope has melted through your body. I believe it is called "Rope Through Body" but I am not certain. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, POPO |

Don't know about everyone else, but I got mine as "The Great Coat" escape, from Mark Wilson's, and adapted it.

Drew, Thanks for the reply. I have Mark Wilson's course and I saw that. I will look at it more closely to maybe figure something out. I do not wear a coat on stage so that is why I did not look at it that closely to begin with. I do use his rope escape as a comedy bit and was looking to add a different type of escape or routine to compliment it. I also have Barry Mitchell's "Thinking Creatively" which has a piece that I have been looking at. I must be a bit dense lately though as I am just not making much sense out of them. I guess I should try them out and see how they work. Also, I would still appreciate any other sources.

I think there is a Illusion still being made and sold called Houdini's rope. I have no idea Houdini had anything to do with it. If my memory is correct Doulas Tilford was selling it. You may not be interested in that item but it may be good research.

You might want to try the search function at this topic has been discussed in depth a couple of times here on the Café. For example you would have found:

The one I use I adapted from Daryl's rope video. Very easy to perform.

Actualy, the one I do is "adapted" fromn the one in Mark Wilson's book. I don't wear a coat, and I use an audience volunteer as the "subject". I only use the principle that Mark Wilson shows.

Thank you all for the replies. Mr. Murphy, thanks for the links. I tried originally to search as "rope through body" but nothing was coming up. I appreciate all of the help.

I am aware of 3 types of ropes thru body
1) "Grandmother's Necklace" principle. This uses 2 ropes, and involves tying the ropes around your body. This method is what you will find in Wilson's complete course, Daryl's Expert Rope Magic, and countless other sources. 2) "Rope thru Neck" principle. This uses a single rope, the rope is wrapped around your neck(or other part of your body, and then the ropes are pulled, and they pass thru. 3) Walk thru ropes: A single rope is placed behind your back(not wrapped nor tied), two spectators can be holding the ends, and without further ado, the magican pulls on the ropes on either side of his body(spectators maintain their grip on the ends), and the ropes visibly pass thru the magicians body.) This is the cleanest *looking* method, but comes at a price. You can find a few variations on this method in the new Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks(but not Fulves Self working rope, nor Wilson's complete course, nor Daryl's Expert Rope Magic(at least I could not find it in there)), I believe Daytona Magic sells an effect by the name Rope thru Body, and a commercial routine called Roped, by Juan Pablo I am *guessing* uses this method in combination with some others(but see the demo to see if you like the effect) I would recommend buying the new Enc of Rope Tricks. Not only will you learn how to do effects like this, but *many* others. John

Good analysis, John. There are also some boxy type illusions that allow you to penetrate a rope or chain stretched in front of you.
The ideal would be to have spectators hold an ungimmicked rope in front of you. You walk forward and tie a silk on each side of the rope in front of you, leaving a center section open. Now you take a third silk, hold it in front of you for a second, step forward and suddenly the silk vanishes. You step out of the way and they see the rope is now behind you with the third silk tied in the center. All silks are slid off the rope and the rope is tossed out into the audience. If that sounds interesting, it will be written up in a forthcoming issue of The Wizards' Journal, which gives you a couple of months to figure it out on your own.

Sounds interesting, sounds like a variation of Harbin's Walking Through a Rope(p352 Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks)?
Where does one access the Wizard's Journal? Jim, I just noticed that we live rather close(~30 min), is there a group of local magicians in the area that meet? John

Popo,
Another great routine is the cut & restored rope effect performed by Jim Pace. The effect: During the finale of this effect, the spectator actually cuts the rope into two pieces and ties them together with a knot. You then place this knotted portion of the rope behind your back (while keeping the actual 2 ends in full view). You then not only restore the cut and knotted rope, you actually pass the restored rope through your body and pass it out to the front "through" your body. Jim has this effect on 2 videos: 1. His 1977 lecture video (on VHS tape but now maybe also available on DVD), or, 2. His new compilation lecture notes DVD (only $15.00 and this lecture video is a compilation of some of his strongest material (kind of a "best of") from his previous 5 videos. See http://www.jimpacemagic.com/ and scroll down a ways (for his new compilation lecture notes) or go to http://www.whiterabbitmagic.net/videos.html to locate his 1977 lecture video. Hope this helps. The Wizards' Journal (probably issue #9) will be found on Spellbinder's site The Magic Nook. There are six IBM Rings in New Jersey, and five SAM Assemblies, so you should be able to locate one near you. Check their Web sites for contact names and phone numbers. Jim

Check out the DVD "Hang 'em High" by Bob Sheets, it's his work on the "rope through body".
Bob is a pro: his presentation is well thought out (and he uses it in his act). Douglas M. |

Magicbob116:
You can find this method online at Daytona Magic, in the new Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks, or check out Jim's "magic Nook" when he publishes the effect w/o the usual gimmicked rope(see above thread). Daytona Magic version sells for $25(I thought it was more like $12), that seems too expensive for this effect. http://daytonamagic.net/customer/index.c......tId=9319 I suspect that Daytona's version is essentially the same as Harbin's "Walking Through a Rope". This is in the new Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks. Both use a very common rope gimmick(I'm not giving away anything, Datona's catalog indicates this) A slight variation on this method is in the new Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks: J. Karson's Rope Thru Body: ungimmicked rope, but you need to wear certain things. Unless you are interested in just this effect, I would recommend buying the new(not Dover reprint) Enc of Rope Tricks. It has several rope through body effects. You would be able to modify(very slightly) the Harbin method to have the effect seen in the Daytona Magic's video. John
