All right, for those of you who don't know me. My name is Jason, and I live in Pa. I'm an amateur magician, but I'm doing my first paid show this Oct. at my brothers birthday party. I'm having just a slight problem coming up with a routine. My brother is 10 and it will go down to 2-3 year olds. I know I shouldn't include card tricks or coin tricks since they are up close and not everyone would understand or be able to see. What I've done up to this point is mostly street or strolling magic, or mini shows for family and friends. Any ideas, comments, anything you could throw out there would be GREATLY appreciated. Feel free to either post it or E-mail me directly.
Thanks a lot.

miser’s dream from the McBride video or some basic silk magic. Color changing silk, 20th century silks, using a TT stuff silk in kids ear and pull it out the other ear.
There’s tons of stuff out there but I’m not really a kid's magician. I have used those effects on kids and they seem to play well. Take care, Dorian |

If you have the Mark Wilson course in magic(doesn't everyone?), you can find some good stuff there suitable for younger audiences.

Rope routines, silk routines, a sponge ball routine with two assistants to help you, six card (or bill) repeat, grandma's necklace, bank night, shrinking glove, etc are all inexpensive or can be made at home. Mark Wilson is a GREAT source!

I've got a magic website, (http://www.geocities.com/teenmagichome/magicby.htm) and on it some kids magic. Some of it may not work for you, and some of it you may want to change, but feel free to use it!!!

20th Century Silks Magic Coloring Book w/Vanishing Crayons Dye Box Forgetful Freddy Confusing Crayons Mouth coils Professors Nightmare (with a kid theme) Animal Production box Appearing Pole or straw Linking Rings Sponge ball routine Stratospheres Hip hop rabbits Crystal silk cylinder Candy Machine Trick Funnel & Mike Pitcher Most of these will cost you. If you want to do a show with something that you might have now, look at Mark Wilsons book like Ick said. Good luck, a kid show is not something that you can fake. It is a tough audience, you have to really entertain them or you will loose their attention fast.

Chris Capehart has a great DVD called "Kiddin' Around." It shows him performing a great kid's show. A lot can be learned from his 2 disk set.

You have got to be kiddin around with me. This 10 year old thread is a bit outdated. The guy who posted it has grown up, got married, and has children of his own. Who the heck do you think you are talking to?

One day they want to take the deck of cards out for a flourish next thing you know, they're out getting their very own set of cups...

There are many others who are now retracing the footsteps of those who have gone before....
I love to see the old threads being revived. Some of the best threads on the MC happened about 2005 - 2008. Let's not kid ourselves, when we post here, it's not just for the sake of one person, or for one time, but for the sake of our Art in general. In 10 years' time, 20 years, 50 years, and beyond, much of the wisdom here will remain, after many of us are long gone.... This particular thread is not especially inspiring, but it does indeed reflect a common issue. One which will always be just as relevant, whatever decade we happen to find ourselves in. Any young performer may find himself trawling this thread in search of answers....so the original question is still just as valid today as it was 10 years ago. Potty |
