In my opinion a "reputation maker" trick is a very confusing topic. Let me explain.
I don't perform walk around on a regular basis anymore but when I did there where a few tricks that I though of as my reputation makers. Just to name a few there was the card on ceiling. The floating cigarette, bill, napkin or rose. My coin routine and so on. These where the tricks I performed most often and seemed to get the best responses from. But it's not really the tricks that are making my reputation. Don't get me wrong, there are some tricks people talk about more then others but not everyone likes the same trick most. Let me give you some examples. At the end of my coin routine I produce a jumbo coin. I do a site gag where I tell them that the jumbo coin is made of rubber. Then I drop it on the table and it makes a loud bang that says it's obviously not made of rubber but of metal. What do you know. There are people in my area that when they see me they ask if I can do that "Big rubber coin trick". Other people would ask if I can make the salt disappear. It's easy to understand why tricks such as the card on ceiling could be a reputation maker. Because people talk about it even when you're not there. Making these float is very strong to some people but not as much to others. Causing objects to travel from one hand to another can be very strong, expecially when it happens in their hands as it does it my coins routine. There are all these tricks that we see as very powerful and memorable. But that isn't always what it takes for them to tag it to your reputation. It all depends on your delivery, timing, atmosphere and personality not only yourself but for the people you perform for. My suggestion to those who are looking for a reputation making trick is to just perform what works for you and let those routines evolve. Basically make your entire act a reputation making act and let them choose their favorites. If you treat each trick as if it where a reputation maker then you'll be giving your spectators a lot to remember. After all the idea of building a good reputation is to be remembered in a positive way (that is if you're aiming for a good reputation). I think the tricks you do does play a aprt but it's a very small part. Ron Jaxon |

It isn't a magic trick which made my rep it is actually a geek trick called blockhead, where I shove a nail or spoon or drill bit up my nose. While my magic should be the focus, people always want to see that one.
