A squirrel is sitting on a tree stump and is approached by a hunter with a gun. The squirrel spots the hunter, but does not feel inclined to move until the hunter starts to raise his gun. The hunter knows this and starts to circle the squirrel. However, as he does, the squirrel shifts on the tree stump so that he is always facing the hunter. Eventually the hunter is back where he started and the squirrel is still facing him. The question is: Has the hunter gone around the squirrel?
The hunter says, "Yes," because he has definitely gone around the tree stump and the squirrel was on the stump the whole time.
The squirrel says, "No." To go around something you must see all sides of it and the hunter has seen only the front of the squirrel.

I say the hunter, but that is completely a guess...

The hunter -- because he's the one with the gun and, if he says he did it, I'm not going to argue with him!

The hunter. The squirrel occupies a space. The hunter has had a relative position of all 360 degrees in relation to the squirrel's position. The orientation of the squirrel is irrelevant.

Right or wrong, what does it matter? The hunter has found a talking squirrel!!!

Apart from that, I'd have to side with the hunter. The squirrel's argument falls apart if he were to turn at different rates or in the opposite direction.

What if the hunter circled the squirrel with a Hula Hoop?

Or circled the squirrel with his finger (as in drawing a circle in the air.)

Then the squirrel would be right!

No where does it state that the hunter moved by walking around!

Therefore, the answer = NO!!!!

If the hunter is right, does that mean all tricks could be advertised as, "Can be done surrounded (as long as the magician is on a revolving stage and the audience is moved around the stage also)."

I say that the squirrel is right. The hunter has not "gone around the squirrel," merely around the stump. This doesn't mean that the hunter won't shoot the squirrel, but at least he will die right!
The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are

Fair point. By "circle" I meant to walk in a circle.

In that case, they are BOTH right and BOTH wrong in their relative perspectives.
(There's an oxymoron for you.)

The hunter has walked around the space that the squirrel occupies, but to the squirrel, the hunter has always been in front of him.

So to each of them personally, the other is wrong and themselves right.

Yes/no?????

Maybe it's just zeroes and ones, eh, Alan?

I have posted what I think is the answer to this question here http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......27&0
It should become clear why I asked it in the first place.
