Does anyone have any thoughts on obtaining an inexpensive sewing machine?
On-line source? Looking to unload an old one? Thanks! |

It depends on what you want to create with your sewing machine. If you are just going to use some basic stitches, an old one will be great, but if you really want to have some fancy stuff, you might consider getting a newer one somewhere cheap.
It all depends on the skill of the person using it. My grandma sews with a machine that is way older than I am and her stuff is really clean and nice and I screw around with a newer one from my mom and it doesn't even come near... Edith |

You can get pretty cheap base models new at Walmart, Target, etc. It really depends on what you mean by "cheap".

Well, the need is to sew straight lines (simple curtains for photo stuff; finish the edges on drop cloths; etc).
Cheap would be "NOT $100". I'll check out Target. Thanks. |

I know WalMart carries a Singer variety with over 20 different stitches for around $95 which is great for a straight stitch. Now unless you plan to use it for future projects, even if you got it used and cheaper, it may be best to just take the backdrops to a seamstress.

Flea markets and yard sales. I have purchased more than one for $20 and less. Some of the older models 30+ years have heavy duty motors that will sew heavy canvass or silk with just the change of the needle.
My wife has six or more set up for various jobs and the old ones are the ones she prefers. She has a Bernina that cost over $1000 that is rarely used. ChrisG

I bought a new inexpensive sewing machine that does basic stitches for around $20 on the internet. I was a plastic cased machine that had two speeds and works well for what I need it for.

Thanks All.
Luckily I was able to reconnect with someone that I used to "barter" out sewing services to - and don't have to worry about hurting my meal tickets (hands) with one of these contraptions. And, no, I won't be explaining what I mean by "barter". =) |

I didn't say it, you did.
And I prefer to think of myself as more of a cufflink than a stud... Don't worry, I don't know what that mean either. |
