I would love to to get hold of an ORIGARMI illusion to perform once just to satify myself. would an illusion rental business work?? over to you guys!! ash |

Hmmmm... Sounds interesting. I think one problem would we the amount of time someone would need an illusion in their possession to put together a good routine, find and edit the proper music, and work through it with an assistant. With frieght charges (both ways) and the rental fee I think it would not be feesable for many one off type shows. Most of the performers out there, do a mix of smaller shows, with some larger shows, with fewer really big shows. It would just be too expensive for most performers.
Could be really valuable to busy perfomers who are doing a mini tour (or a big tour). They could rent the illusion for say 6 months - do lots of shows, then send it back. And get a new one. I do think it is worth giving some serious thought to... scott |

Sb, I think you touched the main reason why this service isn't avaliable. Most magicians or illusion designers don't want their secrets exposed by a poor performance. If you pay a few thousand dollars for an illusion, you're much more likely to rehearse it properly before showing it, as opposed to a few hundred for just renting it. ("Oh, $200 a week for Origami? Um, I'll just rent it for a week, that'll be all I need it for.")
Trixta- renting aside, there's tons of illusions out there that are easy and cheap to build (or have built). A sub trunk is one. So are certain models of sword cabinets, and some levitations. Andrew Mayne's Voodoo Box is made from a large cardboard box, and all the more mysterious for it. I built the illusions for my show, which included some very big effects (such as cutting my assistant into four pieces), on an initial budget of $300- and the price per trick came out to much less than that.

Well, if an illusion builder is within reach of you, would it be possible to go to him/her and do a "trial run" on it? Offer to pay for the trial. Ideally this would be with a builder who you have done business with before and have a relationship with. |

Greetings,
There are illusions renters out there... Usually the big name makers do rent the illusions for certain type of performance and performers... Also, check with local magicians,,, a cool nice magician would loan you his or hers illusions for a bit.... Cheers...

Tabletoptrixta,
I suggest building a relationship with a magician out near you that owns the illusion.. ask him if he would ever let you use it once as it is one of your dreams to try it out.. My dream is to perform a zig-zag unfortunately the only person I know with one lives 3 hrs. away. |

I have rented illusions in the past from a local magician. Not to many do it because of the wear and tare on the equipment. Just ask around, call some magic shops. That is how I found the ones I rented. Don't think that they are going to rent them out for long periods of time. I had mine for 24 hrs. I knew the illusion very well because I used to own it, the zig-zag. Just ask around like I said, and see. Good luck and let us know if you find any.

Does anyone know of anyone who rents out illusions in the Chicago area, like the classics like the thin model sawing or Zig-zag?
Thanks Knightlife |

Unless you rented a illusion somewhere close to you the shipping would be unbelivable. Also as mentioned before the wear and tear. I own several nice illusions and even with a lot of care the wear on them from moving them from show to show is rough on them.

I've rented out illusions in the past an occasionally still do. I don't ship them out they usually pick it up and bring it back when they are done with the show.

Renting illusion is a great idea. I have a zig-zag which I use seldomly, would love to rent it out for 1 week at a time to generate some fund to buy or rent other illusions.

Most magicians won't rent out their illusions. Here's a few reasons why...
1. They worked hard to pay for it and feel that other magicians should earn it like they did. 2. They don't want someone to screw it up. If they give away the secret, it makes life tougher for the renter. 3. What if it gets damaged? 4. It gives that performer a reputation that they really haven't earned themself. 5. They don't want someone copying their act or presentation. |

I at one time rented out some of my illusions but then it came down to having the time to deal with other performers. I hate to be haggled and I hate when they return late. Too much stress for me to do.

I know I'm late replying to this thread but I've just seen it. Here in the UK Russ Stevens has an illusion hire company. Details can be found here:
