I promised myself I would buy just one set of cups.
That did not happen. Now I'm promising myself that I won't be a collector. I will just own sets that I will "use". Just for fun what sets of cups have you owned or own in the order that you purchased them and their current status... Johnson Brass - *sold* Phoenix - *sold* JES Squaty - *sold* Cellini - *sold* Gazzo - *sold* Riser Mini - *sold* Wooden Mini *don't know where they are* GA Babe GA Babe RNT Monti Combo *sold* Cellini Cellini GA Golf Ammar *have not arrived yet*

You realize what kind of pandora's box you will have opened if Bill Palmer responds to this post? It's going to take years to read his reply!
Seriously though Frank, that's an extremely impressive list you have! Kent

Is this meant to be therapy - confronting the problem?
I started making a list, then got worried about the amount of brass and copper that's hidden around the house! I still have the first set of 'proper' cups I bought, but have no idea who made them. They're only valuable to me for sentimental reasons. I haven't sold any, but somehow managed to lose a set of original Sisti cups when we moved house a couple of years ago. Current sets I use most are: Gary Animal's 'Love' cups in guild metal; Sherwood copper; Charlie Miller. The latest addition to the collection was your very own set of Riser minis. Although I have several collector's sets, some of my favourite cups aren't valuable at all - they're often old sets by unknown makers. Why are these sets appealing? - usually because of an unusual shape or size, an attractive patina or just because they 'feel' good to use. Richard
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

I can't list them all here. It would be the longest post ever done on the Café.
But I will list some of my favorites Tannen's Stubby Cups -- my second set of cups. The first set was a set of P&L copper cups, which I sold, because I liked the larger Stubby cups. All the Sherwoods. The Charlie Miller cups -- left to me by a friend. The Turkish Gauklerbecher -- from Ted Lesley Gazzo's PF/DD Chick Cups. These are not in any particular order.

Oh, you know . . . new job, internet fatigue, blogging, and finally a place where I can approach my magic artistically instead of commercially (although one would hope the twain can meet).
I would eventually like to get a set of Johnson cups as well. But I am happy with my sqautties, and will probably use them until death calls. I'm also recording a lot of music right now, on my PC, with CuBase Le--a 48-track studio-setup. I think it would be cool do record theme music for other people's videos, myself. Beyond that, I'm around. As long as Bill Palmer can cover the ebbs and flows of cups and balls ephemera, I'll always be lurking Posted: Feb 27, 2006 1:07pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And I think you did get the squatties because of me. I got them because of Andrew Wimhurst. |

I'm like Frank, I've sold several sets I that were just sitting around. Here's a list of what I have or have had.
Charlie Miller-Sold'em to Jake at rnt2. I thought they were ugly. Johnson-Still have'em. Riser Standard-Still have'em, and use'em at the bar. Riser minis-sold. Riser jumbos-sold to George Daily, who said he may leave them to me. Sherwood silver engraved-Wouldn't part with 'em for the world. Would like a set of Sherwood copper and also a set or Porpers if I find them at a good price. I saw the Auke Van Dokkum nesting cups at WMS and was impressed. It takes a long time for them to nest though. Posted: Feb 27, 2006 5:00pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I had never heard of the Ammar cups til now. I just checked them out on the site. Ewwww......I'd like to see them in person though. Maybe that pic doesn't do them justice. |

1. Royal Magic Plastic cups-got at my first magic lessons in 1974--long gone.
2. Charlie Miller style Indian Cups by Morrisy--barely touched still in bag. 3. Rings and Things Copper Monte, purchased in the Seventies, learned Vernon's routine, still in great shape with small dents/scratches on top. 3. After long hiatus I got the Magic Makers little brass combo cups, don't know why. 4. Two Galli Galli cups, dreams of busking or fairs. 5. Gary Animal Golf in Guild, developing strolling routine. 6. Jedinat Zaubershop set I got from an estate sale, thanks to Bill Palmer's C&B museum for identifying them. Polished off most of the fake patina that made my hands turn black when used. 7. Loomis/Riser Micro Copper chop cup, the favorite. Most are copper. They are all supposed to be workers, but the CM Indians and R'nTs are on the shelf. I also have a small collection of customized mugs that were made for each our project development teams when I was a Product Marketing Manager at Rockwell.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

I agree with Pepka too. I'm getting them because I think they may be a very functional cup for what I'm looking for.
We shall see.

Wow... I'm feeling really noobish! It's because, of course, I'm just a kid and don'r have the money for really good sets of cups, but I only have one set. I don't even know what kind it is, because when I went to the magic shop they said "Oh, we don't have that kind in, but this kind is about the same price, and a bit better quality and a bigger load capacity..." but they never told me what it was.
For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, none will suffice.

Plastic colorful cups (Mark Wilson Course in Magic) - long gone but not forgotten Aluminum cups from Uday - gave it to a friend Phoenix Cups - sitting on top of a shelf waiting for a good patina Super Animal Cups - on the shelf too with the Phoenix Original RnT Chrome plated steel Monti cups - bought this one from Bill Hegbli, currently the ones I use. Like Frank, I promised myself that I'm only getting one set of cups but unfortunately, I didn't keep the promise. As of now I'm promising myself not to be a collector but deep inside me, there's a strong urge to buy a set of Van Dokkum's, Riser's and Sherwood's.

I want sherwood engraved and I would like the von dokkum nesting.
it seems appropriate because I have small, jumbo, I just don't have "regular" becuase I sold my JES cups. and strolling with a set of nesting cups has a tremendous appeal. talk about packs small.... wow.
