I'm interested in the three shell game. However, my magic shop only sells these gold ones that I have heard all kinds of horror stories about, plus they're really expensive. Where can I get some nice shells for about 15 to 25 dollars canadian? (A canadian dollar is worth 87 US cents)
For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, none will suffice.

Stormchaser,
Come join us at the Café's new Gambling section which has a forum (If right you win, if wrong you lose) dedicated to games like the Shell Game. You're also welcome to come visit http://www.scoundrelsforum.com and talk to some of the best shell workers living today. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help answer your questions. BTW, the horror stories are all true. If they're the MM shells in the velvet box, they are inferior copies of the School for Scoundrels "Golden Shells." The SfS street shells (same shape as Golden, but cast in shell colored resin) are the lowest price of the "good" shells but they're still over what you're willing to pay. In your price range, I suggest getting a set of the Vernet shells or just buying a bag of walnuts and making your own.

You can get a really nice set of "starter" shells from Vernet for just a few bucks. They work well.
Get the shell game video from School for Scoundrels to start with.

Ouch... I just found some nice Vernet shells on magictricks.com, only to discover that the shipping plus the cost of the shells will be more than the golden ones my magic shop is selling...

Maybe he can get them for you, and since he's based in Canada the import/export shipping costs shouldn't be as bad.

I have to chime in here. If you have the ability to do so , save you're money up a little for the S4S "Street Shells". They really are perfect for the game, look good and the things that make them work better than most others are unnoticeable to most folk, even other magicians who are unfamiliar with the intricacies of the game. I think mine cost $45.00, but man do they perform well. plus the perfect pea that comes with it lives up to the name. Heck even if you don't want the shells spring for the peas at least, I even use them in my thimble rig routine.
Anything S4S for the shell game.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Just get a some walnuts, a piece of 80 and 120 grit sandpaper and perfect peas. I own resin shells, plastic shells, golden shells and only use the natural walnut shells I made 15 years ago.The naturals just seem to get the best reactions and they look the most like...uh...shells.

I wouldn't do without the perfect peas. They are a must when I perform the 3 shell game.

Plastic and metal shells look like one piece, and don't arouse any comment. The putty and paint that is put on regular walnut shells looks suspicious to audience members. People often ask to look at the shells when they are natural shells. They never ask to examine the silver, gold, copper or plastic shells. John, your audiences have reacted almost exactly opposite to mine. |
