I use Acid Loops. Basically it's a digital multi-track recorder that allows you complete control over eachtrack. Pan, volume, effects, ect. You can find 1000's of loops for free on the web at a variety of websites. You do not need to me a musician to create great sounding music that is all yours!

I've worked with various forms of recording software on both Mac and PC and have found GarageBand for Mac to be the easiest to use.
