This happens quite often when someone discovers on his own that you can put discs on either end of a rod and have a device that will reduce the drag on a box that is pushed down the street. When you point out that they have just reinvented the wheel, they don't take it too well.

Well, people will come to understand this in due time. This happens in the film business. Someone comes up with a new idea only to find that the story was already told.
Bill: I actually read that thread. Sometimes people don't read your posts correctly. |

I appreciate all the kind words from everyone. Sometimes I feel like just dropping off the Café for a while. But then someone posts something like this, and all of these nice responses come in.
The thing to remember most about this is that Mike Brazill didn't ask for a crying dime for this. In fact, when I told him about Christopher's cups, he said, "Tell him to send them to me. I'll polish them for him, free." I hope he gets to see this thread. He doesn't come around here often.

I had no idea you had ever considered staying away from the Café, Bill. That would be a huge loss.
I don't blame Mike for keeping some distance from magic. It is too bad he's not around though. |

Thanks for the kind thoughts. Sometimes I get a bit frustrated. The timing of this thread was incredible.

I didn't know how to punctuate the following, so take a deep breath before the first sentence:
I've also seen younger folk take exception to, some old guy telling them some other old guy over a hundred years ago would have anything to contribute to a conversation regarding the youth of this modern world of ours. But didn't most of us have all of the answers at some early point of our lives? Oh and did I mention, he isn't too keen on people who expose effects as a personal learning tool?

That's right. When I was 15, I would have really taken exception to a lot of things I tell people now. I ws a lot smarter then. I knew all the answers. Now I have learned that there are a whole lot more questions than I ever dreamed of.
One of the most important things I learned from my dad was that the day you stop learning is the day you die, if not physically, then mentally. I just want to keep people from wasting their time and effort. I also want to keep them from hurting magic. But magic is very resilient. It can take a real pounding and still survive. It shouldn't have to, though.

It shouldn't have to but it is nice to know that it can.

I am embarassed to say, I didn't know how adamant you were against exposure until recently, Bill. I think we really have something in common. Exposure has troubled me for a long time. I think many magicians have become complacent about it and some big names have even said they have no problem with it. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but mine is that exposure should never take place. I even have a problem with the fake french drop explanation in C&B...I even have a problem with some of the posts people put up here. Which takes me back to the point. People seem to get offended when someone, like Bill, or anyone refrains from furthering the discussion due to potential exposure. I say, let 'em get offended.

That's the reason they have the Secret Sessions topic here. This is the only forum where actual exposure should take place as "lurkers" can't see it.

I have the same problem with that French drop thing in the Vernon Routine.
I have never liked it. I also agree with Chris about the dicussions and potential exposure...my feling most if not all the time is go to PM or do your own homework. We paint a picture with the magic we do and exposure is like terpentine it can ruin the entire picture. Later, Mobius |

I find it funny when an entire post uses abreviations and someone at the end asks " Is an FPD a front palm drop?".

I am a moderator of another forum. The rules there are basically the same as the rules here. We don't do any open exposure of material.
We got a question one day from a guy who wanted to know how to do a riffle pass. So I told him to combine a riffle with a classic pass. His reply was that he didn't want to have to get hold of a book or a DVD to learn it, he was hoping someone would teach him over the internet. I didn't have to say anything. It was like dropping a dead calf in a field of hungry buzzards!

I just wanted to add that I am another - amongst a long list of people - who has benefited from tapping the wealth of knowledge that Bill has to share. I am enormously grateful to him for his willingness to share information - whether that's on the discussion forum, by PM or e-mail.
Some kinds of information can be found in books or journals, but there is a huge amount that is knowledge in its purest form - experience - and this can only be gained from speaking to someone who lives and breathes their area of expertise. We rely on those people to pass-on this information because without them, much of it would be lost. Until a few years ago, it's likely that you would only have contact with the luminaries of magic if you were to attend magic conventions. Even then, it's unlikely that any old joe would be permitted into the confidence of the cogniscenti: information was much more difficult to obtain in every sense. Now we have an overload of information - all of it available within a few milliseconds at the click of a mouse. It's fantastic that this is available, but it's come at a price. The price that's been paid for this availability (of info and of people) is the loss of respect. Loss of respect for an art, for the principles of that art, and for it's practitioners. On balance I think we're extremely fortunate that the vast majority of people that use this forum do so to enrich their own genuine interest in magic. Sure, there'll be one or two jerks that come along now and again - but they'll be there in every walk of life. I'm just so grateful that people like Bill and Mike (who could just as easily retreat and not bother with the little people) are still willing to share and to help despite these irritations. Richard

I AM one of the little people ... except for my waistline.
I put my kilt on the same way as everyone else -- both legs at once. Seriously, Richard, I appreciate your kind words. I joined the Café a little over three years ago and had no idea what I was in for. Through the Café, I have met (online) dozens of people whom I can call "friend." And I hope someday to meet all of them. I know that I get up a few nostrils now and then, but I don't do this with malice. I will help any serious student of magic. I just need to know how much THEY need to know! I thank all of you for the kind words. Now, let's get out those cups and practice!

Me too- any time I have asked Bill a question, I've gotten nothing but good advice. Thanks, Bill (and a bunch of others too numerous to mention)- you've made this art of ours so much better, just by being available.
