The > is not a greater than reference, but a hold over from my other interest in live music where we setlist geeks write that as a segue symbol (or as my Deadhead friend Robert calls it, a gezintuh. goes into...)
Anyway, I recently purchased a non-gimmicked blendo set called Elemendo. Thia is my first time working with a blendo effect. I've used a crystal tube effect for years with three silks. It occurs to me that adding a 4th silk would not be difficult at all, and linking the two effects would be strong, especially for the patter I use currently. As to the methods, sleights, it's not rocket science, but I wouldn't ask to discuss that here, only my PM or secret sessions. If anyone has an insight, PM would be appreciated. What I am posting for, is to see whether the routining of these two effects is common. Does anyone here use the two back to back as one routine? Have you found the combined impact to be any stronger than the sum of its parts? ps - Any elemendo owners, I have a small quirk in the instructions to mine, which doesn't really affect the method or handling, just something strange. If you've noticed it too, pm me. I'm curious. |

I can't speak for the new blendo effect, but I wanted to put in my 2 cents for the crystal tube. A number of years ago I performed a 30 min act for my college. I did the crystal tube (which I always thought was kind of obvoius - a variation of what's in every kid's magic book) as well as "professional" tricks: ABC blocks, flip-over box, production tubes, C bag, card tricks, etc.
After the show, several of my friends came to me congratulating me on a great show. Then they proceeded to tell me "I think I've figured out how every trick is done..." (aren't friends great?!) "...Except that one with the clear tube!" Since then I use it whenever I can! Just shows how you can get too close to your tricks sometimes. I also have a couple friends who I can trust with my secrets, but who don't know the inner workings of my act. They are my 'layman litmus', and they'll tell me what is working for an audience and what isn't. Turns out it doesn't matter much what I like if the audience doesn't agree. (Oops! Went on a tangent again there.) BTW, I like your idea for a 4 color crystal tube. I see how easy it would be to make it work, but I'd like to hear from you about how reliably you can make it work in practice. If you'd like, PM me when you've played with it and let me know. Thanks!
Happy Trails,

I've had the same experience. When I first got this prop about 10 years ago, I looked at the setup and I said "you have to be absolutely kidding me. That's the secret? No one is going to fall for this, they'll see the secret." I said the same thing about ink to goldfish.
Both get more amazement than I ever expected. Once the three are joined, I don't hold them still after the catch. I keep them fluidly moving. That also helps with a tri-color rope routine I do, which also seems to me something obvious to anyone watching, but so long as I present it right and keep rotating the one big rope, it works. I did that one last week for three cub scouts close up. A crowd of skeptics if there ever was one, not the kind to see something and not call me out. They were geniunely amazed. I'll let you know how the 4 silk goes. It's not that big an adjustment. There is a risk of messing up and accidentally reducing the silks to three. Should that happen, I would be unable to move to the elemendo. But I think with enough practice, this should be easy as a magic coloring book. |

I, too, really enjoy the Crystal Silk Tube, but I gotta tell ya -- I'm absolutely PARANOID that the ends of the silks are gonna slip out of the gimmicks. I go so far as to tie knots in each silk (individually) before stuffing them in the Tube. Initially, I thought spec's would think I'd somehow manipulated the knots, but nobody's ever called me on it -- and the bit typically gets gasps when I do the flourishy reveal.

I had the same idea of combinging those two effects but anyway, where can one get Elemendo?

Leland,
We share the same fears! Knots are cheap insurance. (Beads work too.) Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Rev,
That's a good segue. Whenever I design or buy a trick I try to develop as many things to do with that one prop, before moving on to the next prop.
POOF!

Thanks kregg. The patter I use is church specific, but the general idea could be applied to any humanitarian principle.
I have used the tube to talk about how people come into the church separate, and sometimes even suspicious of "others." (I've always been in small towns, if you can tell.) But the power of the message of the church brings people together and ties our neighbors' concerns to our own. Now with the elemendo, I can take the linked colors and blend them together into the tie dye effect. Lesson: we not only link our lives together, but we become enmeshed in a family. Sounds like an ad for codependency the way I laid it out, I know. The traditional blendos with 4 squares still show connections, but clear dividing lines. The elemendo colors make a more interconnected image. It works for my church presentation, or environmental concerns, the global market, pretty much any theme of making human connections. |
