The other day, I noticed that all the sites I visit on a regular basis where I'm "permanently" signed in had been re-set. In other words, I had to log-in with my usernames and various passwords (including here at the Magic Café!) to access those sites. What would cause my computer to do this? I did not install any new security features, and I currently use a firewall, antivirus, and two spyware programs that run constantly.
Is this something serious, or is it just my computer doing "routine maintenance" by deleting all those log-ins? |

It is very possible that when you clean out your "history" on your computer you also wipe your log-ins. That is what happens to me here at the Café.

Yes, when I used to use Norton anti-virus, it would clean up my cookies once a week, which always reset my logins. If one of your programs cleans your cookies(temporary internet files), logins are usually reset.

Just to be clear (but I'm no expert)...
In essence, your computer knows nothing about the outside world such as websites unless you, or some software, tells it about them. When you go to a website that allows you to have a permanent log-in, the website tells your browser to create a file on your computer called a cookie which will contain (in some form) the login information your supplied. This means that when you go back to that website, it will try to look at the information contained in the cookie file and automatically log you in. If the cookie file has been removed (for example, by mechanisms as suggested in the above posts) then the website knows nothing about your login details and you therefore have to supply the details again. It is probably worthwhile getting to the bottom of the problem - just in case - but hopefully it is just a symptom of some clearing-up activity. I use ZoneAlarm and this cleans various files for me every day (but I think it's set up to ignore cookies). :) |

If you are using opera, check your "delete privacy data" options, and uncheck the "delete cookies"
if you manually delete the cookies, simply do not delete the Café's.
Double posters should be shot!
