Tommy,
That's an interesting comment about there being more strong younger players these days. One would think that with the plethora of shows and information available (much directly from the "top" players themselves) there certainly would be a higher standard as more people would be more informed. I don't know, though. I don't play as often as perhaps yourself and many others on this forum, but from what I have seen, there seems to be nothing but herds that have memorized the glossary and can do the odds and all that, but can't read a simple situation for diddly squat. I feel it's like many hip things (as poker seems to be right now with younger players), it's almost peer pressure to know the language and terms and all that, but the actual fundamentals of play are being overlooked. I would venture to say that in proportion to the total amount of players, the number of decent ones is probably the same or even less than "pre-tv/online-explosion" times. Then again I might be way off, gee golly Miss Molly. Take care Bobby

I know the sharks all DROOL when a young guy dressed like Phil Ivey and already wearing his shades walks towards the table all charged up with the latest information from 2+2 and fresh from watching WPT on TV.
These hot shots ARE the dead money. |

Yea I do think there are far more better younger players, BUT consider the math. The WSOP itself has over 6 thousand entries. OF COURSE there are more younger players playing better.
Thing is that if you learn from TV, you learn a horrible game. Yea many of the new young or even old guys new to the game are indeed dead money. But I wonder as a % of people playing, if it has gone up or down. I mean I bet almost the same amount of young, good players is what it always was as a %. Not easy to say what I mean. Yea more players so more good young players. What % of them is what I would be interested in.

Seriously, I think there's probably a higher percentage of young players who are playing well today than in the past.
The reason for this is the methodology behind learning the game. In the past, you simply didn't get good without sitting down and parting with a lot of money while you were learning, or being mentored by an experienced player who taught you the ropes. Now (if you're serious about getting good) you can shorten that process by a huge amount of time with a combination of previously unavailable reading resources, and online games. Just the fact that online games get dealt three or four times faster than B&M games can put what would have been weeks of playing hands into only a few days. Even the brick and mortar establishments are flourishing today, whereas in the past guys like Doyle Brunson and Johnny Moss had to drive hundreds of miles to find the next game. But there's still tons of dorks who have read Phil Hellmouth's book and watched a few games on TV, maybe played with their friends and now figure they can kick some serious but, all the while being that much desired dead money. |

You see king you get to the heart of my question. For every excellent player, who would have been excellent anyhow, about a 100 or probably LOTS more do the route of read the book and lose.
I just think that scientists seriously underestimated the birth rate of the average sucker!
