A couple of weeks ago I posted here asking for advice on what routines to practice for an upcoming workshop I was going to have with Michael Ammar that was being put on by my local S.A.M. assembly. First, let me say this - I found out about the workshop in early November and saw that there was a limit of 16 people who could participate. Panicky, I e-mailed the S.A.M. contact expecting to be told I would be put on a waiting list. Instead, he told me there may not be enough people (at least 6 were needed) to hold the workshop. Smile That really surprised me. It was $50 for two hours with Michael Ammar. I come from an industry where any kind of training is incredibly expensive so much so that an individual usually cannot afford it on their own...so $50 to me seems really cheap. Anyways, on Friday enough people had signed up at the last minute and we had a total of 10 people.

It was a nice relaxed session. Pretty much someone would say "I really need help on such-and-such" and they would demonstrate whatever move they were working on and he would help them out. Cups and Balls final loads were big along with Toppit tips. He also taught us Play it Straight Triumph which he has on the Card Miracles #6 tape and some rubber band magic. I have to say that I am not into rubber band magic. Everyone is probably going to jump on me for this, but I find it boring. He made me do it though Smile

Immediately after the workshop was the show which was free to the public. My understanding is that this is a national effort by S.A.M. in the hopes of boosting membership. The show was great - he did some effects where he used the Toppit and some with invisible thread. He also did his cups and balls routine and of course, Card on the Ceiling. His last effect was a cool Bill in Lemon that went a couple of steps beyond what I have seen done before. And he did rubber band magic...so I asked my friend who was with me if she found that interesting and she said "yeah" so I guess I'll have to reconsider my reluctance to learn it.

The lecture was for S.A.M. members only so I finally joined! It's something I've thought about doing for awhile but haven't gotten around to. After all that, I was the only new member who joined that night although I think some members renewed their dues. I thought the people at the S.A.M. assembly were very friendly and look forward to being a part of their group.

Thanks for the report, Magicgirl. I remember your earlier post -- I hope some of those sleights came in handy.

Wow, only $50 for a session with Ammar -- that does sound like a bargain! I don't know what something like this normally goes for, myself. I co-ordinate workshops for a professional association in a not-so-affluent industry, and they go for $50. But the general rule with magic seems to be "charge more, magicians will pay". (Alas, it's true. I'd pay significantly more than $50 for the kind of workshop you're talking about.)

Glad to hear everything went so well.
