If you see Cyril's new effect with a finger ring... I can tell you it can be done live and will fool you badly... as it did me when he showed it to me.

Larry,

Laymen will see the same thing if it was live. (Perceive)

They don't know what move is supposed to come next.

When it's on tv, it has to be edited.

There are certain things that wouldn't stand to the test of slow motion or rewinding.

Remember the rule of not doing a trick twice...because after the first time they know what to look for.

One more thing, comments like yours make me suspect jelousy from the part of magicians. Trying to belittle a succesful magician.

That is so awesome!

Have you seen the one where he is an old man and does the lean? He's a PHENOM!!! If I were Blaine or Angel I'd be worried. VERY worried.

Jay

I wouldn't be worried at all, both these guys have already made their money...

Will,

I have no idea why you're attempting to lecture me, especially since, in essence, you're mostly saying the same things that I already said.

You said, "...Laymen will see the same thing if it was live (perceive). They don't know what move is supposed to come next...." Previously I said, "...laymen might not perceive the difference...." So what point are you trying to make that differs from my point?

You said, "...When it's on tv, it has to be edited. There are certain things that wouldn't stand to the test of slow motion or rewinding. Remember the rule of not doing a trick twice...because after the first time they know what to look for...." Previously I said, "...I happen to think that...(video editing)...is a smart move, for the very same reasons that info2victor mentions above...(info2victor said, "...sometimes it is the video itself giving out too much information. In real performance, with proper presentation and mis-direction, it is often that the spec. never see your 'secret move', even you do it quite boldly....") So again, I ask you what point are you trying to make that differs from my point?

Now as to your conclusion about me, you said "...comments like yours make me suspect jelousy from the part of magicians. Trying to belittle a succesful magician...." I say, "Comments like yours make me suspect that you don't read postings closely. As I said before, I think that Cyril is fantastic, and I wish him all of the success that he so richly deserves. Um, Will, next time you drink Smile , try decaf."

Larry,

I'm not attemting to lecture you. I cannot lecture someone who knows much more than me.

The comment I made was exactly how I felt as I read your post.

There are many examples here in the Café (it does make me upset) when other magicians can give credit to someone who has learn how to present their magic to their target audience.

I'm not saying you are that way, but as I read your post it did gave me that feeling.

"If you saw this in person it wouldn't look exactly the same because the video is edited."

Then ofcourse, you clarify what you really feel.

But just the above comment can be seen as taking away from the performer.

Will, it's beyond me how stating a fact about editing and its impact, and an opinion about how fantastic he is, can reasonably be seen as taking away from a performer, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Anyone who, like me, is a fan of Cyril's, should check out all of the WEB clips of his magic.

I've known Cyril for years and I can honestly say that the only thing better than Cyril the magician is Cyril the person. He's one of the nicest people in magic and deserves all of the success that is finally coming his way.

That's awesome man, it's always great to see good people make it big. From what I've seen of Mr. Takayama so far (about 9 hours on youtube!) He's fantastic. Some of the effects he does for people are VERY bold, like the stick of gum to pack of gum, and ending clean. He's an awesome showman as well.

Mr. Biro, what did that one member mean by "his dvd's"? I'd like to get my hands on a Cyril performance only DVD.
Also, I'm sure his new take on the "Mercuring" effect is excellent. On the video of his performance, when he's back in the studio speaking in front of some people, and he removes it off that spectators finger... I'm sure Paul Harris has a word for it. The woman is just blown away, it's the kind of thing magicians dream of, just having a spectator completely and utterly in amazement. Well done Mr. Takayama. If I'm ever near Glendale, I'll be sure to hold Dean Dill hostage until Cyril shows up!

P.S. Mr. Biro, next time you see Mr. Takayama, you should get him on the magic Café!

I'm also a huge fan of Cyril, especially when he puts his new twists on old tricks. It makes me try out new spins on my material.

I think Cyril is doing some of the smartest, most inviting, and universally appealing magic today.

A friend of mine pointed out to me that Cyril was here in Vancouver, BC for the '93 PCAM convention. I didn't believe it until I pulled out my old souvenir T-shirt and sure enough, there was his name on the back (along with 300 other attendees).

There are plenty of torn and restored bill methods in print.
And Cyril's magic is not in print or up for grabs.

So whose restoration is that. I really like it and have a good idea how it is done.

It's not for sale. Either he thought of the method, or someone else did and sold him the rights. Unless you figure it out yourself, you won't be learning it. That's how it is with a lot of Cyril's stuff.
Sorry!
