Are there any good competitions to go to that are focused more on actual stage illusions versus manipulation and bird acts? I have been looking but they don't seem that easy to come by. I just want to get the chance to compete and see what other people are doing. It would be best to find competitions in the Midwest but any information you have on any competitions in the nation (USA) would be great. Thanks.

All the competitions I have seen focus only on manipulation for the sheer fact that it would be one huge cluster of magicians trying to load in their massive illusion into the stage, along with the 12 other magicians trying to do the same.

That is a good point. Have you ever seen illusionist mixed in with manipulation acts?

It's been done and it can be done but winning is another thing.
For an illusion show to succeed, one needs to apply as many of Fitzkee's Audience Appeals as possible and establish an audience connection prior to the presentation for added impact and character development. Time lines generally prevent this, and set-up/breakdown time.

I thought there was one run as part of a Las Vegas convention, but all I can remember about it is that the UK illusion act called Safire - who ARE brilliant! - took part in it a few years ago.

MarkFarrar,
I think you are right about the Las Vegas Convention (World Magic Seminar???) but I think is by invitation only.

Having been to many S.A.M. conventions, illusion acts do not fare well in competition, with a lay audience great! But every "magician" knows an "illusionist" only has to open and close doors and have a few $$$ and a "little window dressing" as the masked magician would have you believe. That is why there are so many great illusion acts. Right!!!??? Illusion acts in competition and mentalist acts rarely do well in all out competition, in categories, like at FISM no problem.
"Chance to compete" - look for local talent shows/competition, suggest one to the local fair, etc. Do it for the fun! "see what others are doing" - tape!!!!!! Rarely did I see anything new (or great) in the competitions with regards to illusions! Sad to say! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

But if you could afford too, try to go every year to the French National Congress of Magic. Spanish is maybe one of the best national congress in card magic of Europe. But sure French is the best in stage magic. All the best magic, Pablo Tejero
