I think I can beat that. I was setting up to perform for a bunch of kids and a clown started making jokes about many things. He started by saying "Look at all the people in my line and look at his line, it's got to tell you something." I didn't even set up yet and he was all ready putting me down. All I could think to do was to agree. This was an event for hundreds of kids, and wanted to provide some good entertainment. In my seven years of performing I could not believe a guy with a multi-colored wig is going to put another performer down. (((( When I started to set up my table I was going to give him my card and talk to him later, but then the unexpected put downs came.)))) When I started performing and the "oh how did he do that" voices arrived, he began to say "Oh wow, how did you do that?? Can you fly like David Blane?" Then he said to all the people in line for balloons, "I have my magic case beside me and maybe we need to have a magic competition." It ended with him leaving. The people who liked the magic, let him know with there response. Maybe go over to him and whisper "I don't appreciate your comments, please stop." What should I have done?

I would have been tempted to say something along these lines:
"Let's play a game! Does anyone want to play a fun game?" The crowd starts to show some interest. "Let's pretend that we're CANNIBALS. And cannibals eat people." The boys start to make disgusting sounds, and the girls tell them they're being gross. "Boys and girls, do you know why cannibals won't eat clowns?" The crowd murmers a bit. "Because they taste funny!" Laughs and groans come from the crowd. "But don't worry Binky; the cannibals would have no trouble EATING YOU ALIVE, isn't that right, boys and girls!" With any luck, Binky would start to look nervous. --- OK, it's just a fantasy, but I can dream can't I?

He is nothing but an insecure AMATEUR.Let not you heart be troubled. This guy was an aberration. Most performers we meet,no matter their Art,would never act like this.
Take comfort in the fact that a person like this will not have longevity.Best Rich |

You did the right thing by taking the high road Gregory. I just had something happen to me this evening where a fellow magician and I thought friend undercut my price for a gig I had lined up.This was after many conversations of keeping our price the same so we both get equal gigs in our area. I guess I will take the high road also but it is not what I want to do. You and I will hopefully have our piece of mind doing the right thing.

You didn't need to do anything else. Karma will take care of it in the long run.

Although the clown did a mistake but you can't blame on him because he's just trying to get some attention too just like us,next time try not to perform on the same time with other entertainer accept musician because it can distract your audience concentration

I am not a fan of clowns. BUT let me say some of the previous posts go way too far. AMATURE clowns looking for attention are as bad as AMATURE magicians doing the same.
Taking the high road was the way to go. "don't wrestle with pigs, the pig likes it and you get crap all over you". As for clowns. They are the same as magicians really. They bring all the same insecurities and nonsense to their art that we bring to ours. We like to look down on them because it makes us feel better. They are simply people doing something they love. Many of them are as have been stated. But then again look to your left and then to your right, chances ae BOTH of those people here are the exact same way. We tolerate it though because they can do a double lift. To make rash generalities about large groups of people is not right.(your jugglers do that a LOT!)(oh and that was a joke by the way) Personally outside Ringling and Cirque' I can't bear to watch a clown. But lets not judge them.

Say what you will about clowns, but criticizing jugglers is a bit too much. You know we all carry clubs, and know how to use them. HA HA HA HAVE FUN Al Angello
