That's a Beanie Baby tim...sheesh! open up one of those on-stage with a can opener to take out the watch - and you'll have every kid around crying...

Hmmm now there's an idea, reach in and pull the watch out of the beanie baby's chest, then it slumps to the floor in a pool of blood. That will be great in my kids show where I do the blades then hand out new blades to all the kids so they can try it.

Brendan - you're thinking small - use a chainsaw...and make the child volunteer select which of the 12 colours of Beanie Baby 'gets it'
is anone else worried about the direction this is going? M@ |

Ok how is this, I typed this once already but it didn't post grrrrrr.
Magi has a naked can and a bunch of labels. Tin is handed out for inspection and in the process it is dropped and dented "accidently", the magi states it doesn't matter and shrugs it off with little response. Volunteers then select labels and one at a time the magi wraps the labels around the can and reaches her/his fingers thru the side of the tin and removes some of the contents corresponding to the label(a few garbonzo beans perhaps). The label is then removed and shown to have a hole in it, but the can is still intact. The next label is then applied - baby carrots for example. Magi pokes fingers thru side and removes a carrot. This continues till cooked card label for previously lost card or baked watch. I envisage the dent will allow the fingers to push thru and retrieve the food that is hidden on back of label, nested in dent it won't bulge. If you can get blanks from a cannery perhaps you could open the can at the end and show that it is actually totally empty. It would also allow a larger dent. My doing the denting as part of the act means it doesn't need to be hidden and the tin can be handed out at the end for inspection. Just some thoughts Brendan

How about something a la Fear Factor. Instead of using tins use 9 mason jars. IN 8 of the jars have something revolting (worms, maggots.... I'm sure after reading the posts in this forum you all could come up with a list of 8 items. in the 9th jar have a sweet or a chocolate bar or a gift cetificate or.... well you get the point. Begin the routine by calling 3 specs up on stage. Start a patter about how ancient man had well honed psychic abilities to keep out of danger and these abilities lay dormant in modern humans. Have one of the specs volunteer to be the eater, one to be the writer, and one to choose. Roll out the cart with the 9 jars on it and describe the contents in gory detail. The writer then writes a number on each of the jars. (Getting an arachniphobe to write a number on a jar of spiders should be interesting.) The eater then picks a number. You could play this a couple of ways: either the eater announces the number or writes it down and you use the usual techniques to get the number. (Don't assume that they will pick the "nice" jar because you will get yahoos who pick the worms.) Have the eater focus on the number while the 3rd spec chooses a slip from a bag or rolls dice or whatever... You can play out the finale like a game show. "If you had picked 6 she would be eating...." |

Variations:
Have the eater announce thier choice before the writer writes on the jars. Drinking buddy will invariably NOT write the eaters number on the chosen jar. At the finale don't have the person who chooses a number announce the number. Instead pick up a jar and hold it next to the eaters mouth, partially unscrew the lid, "Did you choose 6?" "NO" Should have the audience on the edge of their seats. |

If there's five cans, four of which have dog food, and one with something yummy. I'm envisioning a roulette routine with the labels placed next to the cans by a spectator....

BRENDAN: The idea of wrapping the label around the can and pulling the contents out is great! It reminds me of a sort of 'Artist's Dream' effect - Now we just need a method....
WILLIAMANON: Interesting twist! It's like the six-covers-with-a-knife-under-one but quite interesting! By pre-marking the "good" can you'll know what number it's at when the spectators choose their cans and write numbers on them. When we did 'The World's Longest Magic Show' I improvised an effect with my breakfast. I had 5 nice foods and one old hotdog that had been lying on the floor since the night before. I placed the hotdog at position 5 and the other items 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. I had a spectator throw a die and whatever number came up, I had to eat that item. (Method - the dice had no 5 on it). It was great. An intriguing trick I got to do while eating my breakfast! Your idea is even more fun. 5 horrible cans, one nice one. All mixed up, then numbered. Whatever number comes up, the person opens it but doesn't have to eat the contents. Alternatively, 5 nice cans and one yucko, and they all agree to eat the contents if there number comes up.

So, if not Russian Roulette, what else can we do with a naked, unlabelled can containing a mystery?

Knit it a sweater? haha
How about a transposition? Of course, the audience will probably just think we switched the labels, but it's an idea.

Transposition... interesting thought.
If you could somehow prove what was in each can in the first place, then swap the labels and the contents change as well...?

Open each of the cans. Show contents of each. Magically 'Heal' each can. then do the transposition via the catalyst of changing the lables - all while in spectator's hands....

It's possible Hatrick - hopefully WAYNE ROGERS (who I know was in here yesterday) will answer that.

Mat! You could add a piece of string between the cans have one open & empty, the other full - and they transpose!?
