Hello fellow magicians, I have came across an effect that I have been working on for a little over a year now, and I finally think that it has come to its perfection, although there are always areas that can improve.
I am asking if you can view my demo video, and please give me your CONSTRUCTIVE criticism? http://www.beezermagic.com/eclipse.wmv Thank you so much in advance! ...Nick |

Decent application of previous inventions but kinda illogical.
Why does it disappear, why do you need a quarter, and why does it appear on their hand(or whereever?) Why does the quarter move, what does that have to do with anything other than covering the method? Not to mention that loading is done beforehand or that you go off camera to load the gimick... Have you seen that "moving spots" effect? a card is held, a spot magically appears on it while actually moving, then you flick it and it changes to correct color, and then its handed out to be a signed card....or matthiew bich's who seems to use similer method to make "holes" move throughout the deck... It's a pretty shocking effect, yes.... but contstructivly I think you have to work on the logic for the spectator, such as the things I mentioned... Come up with a handling/presentation that eliminates all the illogical things and you'll have a pretty cool effect imho |

It certainly looked nice, I give you that. I agree with Daegs in that there are certain illogical things with it. Another example is why you use all four aces when only one is actually involved in the effect. I'm sure if you work on giving this a logical plot, you'll have an outstanding effect. Keep at it, for sure, as you are on to something...

Looks good. But why all the talk? Ambitious card being boring? What does that have to do with anything? You have a potentially clean visual effect. So just do it. I'd lose the precious background music and sorry, but pretentious logo and patter. It doesn't add anything. While it's a little out of nowhere I don't mind the quarter being placed on the card. It's transfering the pip to a piece of paper that makes very little sense to me. The most logical and satifying thing to do would be to put it back on the ace. Anyhow, that's my advice. The main visual piece of magic lookks great! In this case, less talk is more.

Ok! Thanks a lot for all your contributions! I guess its all how I MYSELF perform MY magic...how I like to PRESENT it. A lot of magic for me, doesn't need a reason. Magic is magic in my opinion. Thanks a lot EVERYONE!...Nick!

You seem like a smart kid, but sometimes less talk and more magic is good. I think this is one of those times.
The effect isn't bad, just like many have said, it doesn't make sense. Why aces, why a moving quarter... I'm sure you get good reactions but I think the centerpeice is just the pip being on their hand, if you are gonna animate a quarter, animate a quarter on the talbe, not on 4 cards. I think you have good ideas they are just put together in the wrong way. |

Maybe have the quarter move and stuff and the pip is gone and then turn the quarter over the see it drawn on the other side of the quarter. Say the quarter stels the largest diamong in the world or something.

I thought the effect itself was great! Thanks for sharing it. But do take note of the earlier comments as regards performance and presentation.

Not only too much talking, but your writing isn't quite there yet.
There were a few lines that bothered me, the wording was awkward. "As...Just to assist me.", "Magical Miracle", "Back when Houdini Lived.. Occasionaly he would always use the four aces, in a lot of his card tricks.","Because of that relationship between mind, magic, fantasy, power, money.", "Bad case of bad acting." (I would also avoid negatives towards your fellow magicians, reflects badly on you and them.), "Completely Traveled", "Almost like magic" I realise that a lot of this probably had to do with not enough rehersal (not practice) You have to reherse the stink out of your work. You should never ever ever have to pause to think about your lines. It should all seem smoth as glass. Don't pass the quarter around, it's a spectators quarter, no need to go the extra mile to prove it's normal. "Middle Pip", not "Middle Diamond", makes you sound like a pro. The effect is great, I would recomend using a concept like the coin is carrying the pip, put it on the spectators hand, and tell them the pip is now on their palm. When the look it won't be. Tell them you muct have put the quarter down too hard, and to look on the back of their hand. The whole thing does need more of a flow of logic. This will help your audience follow it, as well as assisting their suspencion of disbelief. There realy does need to be some variety of excuse for what is happening though. I hope that's what you ment, and I wasn't too critical. I call em like I see em. |

I just again want to let everyone know that the way I patter, talk, things like that are how I present myself as a magician. Most layment don't know what a PIP is. They know what a DIAMOND or CLUB or SPADE is. Get me?
I agree...it could have been rehearsed more, and that's ok...but I hope you all get the basic Idea of the effect. If you do not like my dialog, the way I move my hands...how high my voice is...that really isn't my problem. AGAIN - I am not just throwing all your suggestions back in your face...I will consider ALL of them...just sending you, my fellow magicians some insight. I don't care if you felt insulted when I said bad acting, I get huge laughs from spectators after I say it, and it makes the magic all the better. Thanks! Nick. |

Nick the effect is great. I too have to agree with most of the comments already made. We're not knocking you as a magician, but offering the advice and criticism you asked for so don't take it personal.
Great job! |

Sorry, this was just boring to me.
Talking as if you had been doing magic for 30 years, then you load the gimmick (which is more than obvious!), and the way the diamond traveled is just for camera here, it is not the way in happens in performance. I guess you are still too young to be convincing. I know this is kind of harsh to say, but you wanted an honest comment and this is it. If I saw this performed live, the way you show it here, I wouldn`t be amazed at all. People here are nice trying to say "yeah, well done" etc. To me, this was nothing more than an amateurish performance. |

The two main things that can make an effect would be if it makes sense and does it look natural. Again there should be a rhyme and a reason for everything brought into the effect. And most of this doesn't have that. Like Daegs said

Generally people don't want awkward off camera loads ect during a demo for an effect. And seeing your hand in that mechanics grip the entire time then your index finger does a disappearing act. There was way too much patter for the effect, I found it boring. The patter is half, if not more, of the effect. And from the patter I saw no point to what was happening. I don't really see it involving the spectator either, but that may be blamed on the camera work. I am just thinking that there are faster effects that get greater reactions that can be done with 4 aces or a quarter.

Breezer be warned, posting videos on this site is a bad idea because there are always people who 'could have done it better' and use it as a chance to felx there magical biseps!!! and try to come across as the all knowing world champion magician.
Anyway from me I feel it is pointless for me to repreat what some of the people here have said, take on board the constructive points that were posted earlier in the thread and discount the latter comments which we delivered in a way that was designed not to offer advice but to shoot you down!! don't let this disshearten you/ Ps I thought the vidoe production was very good, the efect 'not my thing' but thanks for posting it!! |

Video production is nice and the effect is excellent, I agree with what they all said, your presentation needs a bit of work, but nothing in life is perfect.
As a suggestion, I think you should take a look at 'pointless yet magical' effects like Paul Harris' 'Twilight Angels' or perhaps his 'Cross Twist' just to see how a genius like Paul translates an illogical effect to a magical experience that the spectators can digest. Apply that to your effect and you're ready to rock. Good luck, Logan
