Hocus-Pocuc is just selling the new DVD from James Coats NO PROPS NEEDED.
It's sound very interesting: # Pull of your finger and show it in your other hand. # Magnetize a spectator's fingers so they stick together. # Switch a spectator's right and left sides. # Make a bird appear anywhere at anytime. # Make an angel appear on the shoulder of a spectator. # Make a spectators' arms go through the floor. # Perform a 5 person levitation with no gimmicks Does anybody know more about it?

I just got through watching NO PROPS NEEDED and here is a review.
Here goes the review: -I liked the overall concept of the DVD, it reminded me that magic starts with the magician not the props. Myself doing magic for 30 plus years in Chicago I have found myself in that situation where I have no cards or props and have forgotten some of the cute tricks I use to do. -The quality of the DVD is very good and very clear. -James reveals a cool trick about the five person levitation. This is an old trick that people used to play around with in grade school or in boy scouts, pre 1980's. James added a magic flare to it which makes it cool and very usable to "Float" a person with other people. You can perform it anywhere as long as you have a total of five people. I tried it at the Golf Course at the 19th hole and it amazed people so he gets an "A" for that. If you tell a good story then this trick is for you. -My other favorite is James' version or add on on Meir Yedid's Finger Fantasy effect. James takes his finger off and then shows it in the other hand. A great add on to those who like Meir's work. Also James did do a great job on telling who or where to find mnore information on Meir's effects. -The effect "Appearing bird" is funny and can only be used in the right situation. It bascially takes advantage of the fact that peoeple know you are a magician and then ask you to do a trick. You make a bird appear but not the kind they are thinking of, "The finger bird". If done right it could be cute. Warning: don't do it for kids or anyone without humor -The magnetic finger trick is a nice spin on some old 1950's school ground tricks. When I played around with this technique we used 2 pencils and it was shown in science course work back in the day. James uses people's fingers and it comes across well if you have a good spectator that listens to you and doesn't go fast. -I really like the switching peoples sides. It really works and is a easy yet cool concept that plays well and has endless options depending on patter. -Angel trick was okay. It's the standard trick that was in Jaw Droppers. James does mention Steve Fearson's spin on it but doesn't show it. So I had to go to Fearson's site to download and it make since to me know how you can use it to vanish in seconds. Overall I think the DVD is good. It's has a hand full of tricks that I will use and some that I would not use. This DVD if anything reminded me that magic goes beyond cards and props. Magic starts with the magician. For that reason I recommend the DVD. |

Dear Magic Café Members:
Thank you very much for the kind words about No Props Needed. Most know me for my Pickpocket Magic but my passion is exploring old or forgotten forms of magic to inspire magicians to get back to their roots. The goal of every DVD is to inspire the root form of magic which is thinking out side the box. I ask that if you give a review or feedback please make it honest and informative. Every review helps me create better instructional media for all of you. Once again thank you. Marshall thank you for the review. Magically, James Coats |

Hi Walther:
Thank you very much. I really wanted to focus on a form of magic that has been forgotten. The last time body magic was at it's peeks was during the 1930's and 1940's. If I can highlite it enough then others will step in just as they did with pickpocket magic. With No Props Needed, I pulled out some simple easy ideas from outside the magic industry. People like Andrew Mayne have started laying down the foundation for body magic and I thought it was a great concept to add to. Each trick is simple and goes well by itself or mixed with others. Thanks, James |

The arms through floor is very interesting. You have someone lay down on their stomach and you hold their arms up in the air. James says this causes the blood to flow out of the arms. When you slowly place their arms down the blood slowly returns. Once the arms stop on the floor the blood is still filling up the arms making it feel as if the persons arms are going through the floor. Let me try it real quickly.......................................
I just got through trying this effect with my son and it feels weird. It does feel like your arms are passing thru the floor. I understand that it's a technique used in chinese medicines to help with the flow of Chi. Either way if feels cool and the reactions you get are good as well. At least that's what my son said when he said "Wow it feels like my arms are going thru the floor". |
