Wrapping up practice on my revised CD manipulation routine but...
I NEED A FINALE! The last minute of the act is as follows: A Red CD has the color pulled out of it as it changes into a red silk The CD is thrown away and a silver goblet is produced from under the silk Streamers or Confetti are thrown out of the goblet (another CD is produced from it?) Where to go from here? I will be performing another manipulation act right after it so I was thinking that a costume change to fit the new act was possible... (but not entirely practical). Any suggestions for CD manipulation finales are greatly appreciated! Many thanks! Derek Merdinyan |

I've seen the DVD (I own it...) There are some good ideas on there but I think I am going to be sticking with my moves for the most part. Also there are no climaxes on the DVD except for the lazer disk production. I don't want to give anything away, but this isn't a sunny day production if you catch my drift (so I cant do it here)

Instead of producing only 1 CD from the Goblet at the end, produce a single CD with say 5 CD's behind it. Then do a coin star spread for the finale. Just a suggestion!

Hmmm Coin star spread. That's interesting. I wonder if it is possible to do with something that big? I'll give it a shot. Maybe it'll work better with mini CD's.

What about taking the premise of the shrinking or diminishing cards and do it with cds. This way there is a logical reason for them to shrink down to the size of a mini cd. Then you could do a sequence with them ending in a 5 star CD spread. It seems like a logical transition of effects that could work.
Another idea is to shrink it down to a mini cd. The mini cd then turns into silver mylar streamers. These streamers can then be collected back and used as a cover for a large production of some sort. Kyle

An add-on to Kyle's idea - produce a big CD castle from the streamers as a finale.

In his book; Compact Disc Manipulation Manual, John T. Sheets produces two fans of giant (like 13" in size) CDs. Very cool and very easy. You can find it at Denny & Lee's.

Hey Ben,
I havn't heard from you in quite some time! I currently have a protege' working on a CD type Act. I think it important to do your own thing when it comes to the finale. But, there have been some excellent suggestions...Giant Discs...Cd Castle...Coin Star (I personally like that Idea). |

I am going to try a couple of those ideas plus another one I was PMed... I think I may shrink a CD and then change it into a fan => 5 star. They all vanish in a cloud of glitter and a CD castle appears. I've built several appearing card castles but never a CD castle. THat'll be tricky but I will give it a shot. Any ideas for how to modify the construction of the appearing card castle to cds?

Derek: This sounds really good. I like your thinking on it and the fact that you are paying attention to how they transition from one to the other and build up in an emotional response that can be powerful. Let us know how it is going and what other help we can give to you.

The other idea for a finale I was thinking of was a costume change. Take a CD and vanish or "crush" it into a type of mylar confetti and then do the change under the cover. The question is what would the change be to? I will be performing in jeans and a hoodie sweatshirt. I could easily conseal a costume inside the sweatshirt but coming up with a change that makes sense is difficult.
Thanks again for all the help and comments guys! Derek Merdinyan |

Tell me a bit more about the character you are playting on stage. Often times this will help us steer you in the right direction as to what should happen in the act to better support the character and his actions.

I am constantly struggling with creating/ discovering my real personality. It's really hard for me to explain the charactor for this act. If it helps any, I will be performing to the song 'Eclipse' it was probably used a few times on WGM for various acts.

Derek, is your performance done in-door or out-door - it makes a lot of difference in developing the routine.

Good question James. The only reason I asked about the character is because often it is how the character is defined that steers the performer in the right directions. If the character is defined well, then you will foten times know what is appropriate for that character to do and what they would not do. It also allows you to know in what style the character would do things.

Derek, could you also specify what kind of in-door environment? Eg theatre, hotel function rooms (no proper stage), shopping mall events, etc. All these environment need to be considered for developing your finale.
The next thing to consider is Kyle's suggestion - the performance character for the CD act. Knowing your character would help in creating a powerful finale that would bring you to the limelight. |

I think I got it.
Interestingly, it is not a charactor I am trying to get across. Or maybe it is... that's where it gets hard to describe the persona of the charactor. What I am really trying to get across is more of a feeling. Since this act is targeting mainly people in their mid 20s and below, not saying that older people wouldnt like it, I want to show the younger generations that magic can be 'cool' and that far transcends the linking rings and the card tricks that 'Uncle Bob' does every year. I think that if I can get across that magic can be a social draw then it could help bring about a new age of young magicians (particularly in my area ) Hope that helps some Derek Merdinyan |
